hi everyone.

it is gonna bit BIG TIME for me in 2 days as I will have to decide potentially if I want to accept or not a job in Mauritius.

im now in mauritius for 2 days for final meetings/interview.

i thought coming here would give me the answers to my auestions right away. it  is not the case.

my main concern: BEING ISOLATED SOCIALLY by moving here.

i have seen a lot of mauritians stay together playing games on the beach playing cards... and pratically no europeans with them.

i dont know how the intergretion is but my first impression is thaqt it is pretty much separated.

my main main main concern is not to be close to people i know here and then i would feel really lonely. the fact that there is not proper city center at grand baie makes it more complicated... i guess everyone lives at different places... how to make sure to have a social life...??

i guess lot of people move with their family and that makes it much easier.

as a matter of urgency could you give me your feedback based on your experience living here ?

it is definitely different to what i thought and i need to make sure i will make the right decision in a few DAYS time...

thank you for your onctinuous help and support,

arnie

I've been here for 2 weeks in QB and have a good mix of Mauritian and expat friends. As far as I'm aware there are more expats in GB so if that's what your looking for then you should be fine. If you speak French then you're flying!

Best of luck

thanks guys for your comments and reassurement... very helpfull for me.

It's not really anything to do with the expats. Most Mauritians dont really integrate with other ethnic groups in my experience. For example white Franco Mauritians don't interact with anyone else and vice versa. Culturally they seem to be miles apart and there is no real sense of a single national identity. But they still manage to get along all the same.

Hi,

Sorry for replying pretty late to your post.

If you are moving to Grand Baie, you really have no worries. There is a large expat community here, its VERY friendly and you will find there are actually an awful lot of Brits here.

To be honest, I would say there is far more chance of social isolation in the UK. Here is very much more social.

Feel free to drop me a line if you want to catch up some time.

Kind Regards,

Paul

Took me a few months to settle down originally, but now we love it here - we thought we had a good social life in the UK but we have a far busier one here.

We also have a mix of friends - locals and expats - just be yourself and most of all be friendly :)

Good luck :)

Hi Arnie,

If you are a social person you will easily make friends, so don't worry.

Please contact me if you are still looking for an accommodation.

I am a Mauritian living in London. Perhaps we could meet so we share some tips before you leave the UK.

So Arnie - unless I've missed something, what was your decision?

am Nigerian and as far i can tell, i got some good Mauritian friends, as long as you are a good and nice person, making friends is never hard. you just have to approach and strike a conversation, sometimes the conversation could be on common interest like Football, songs,IT or games. take care

hi,
I just seen your post.Maybe your problem is that the place you are staying is not good as Grand-Baie is the place where there are most foreigners and mauritians as well. People living in Grand-Baie are very friendly but it depends where you are living in Grand-Baie and your neighbourhoods you see. Maybe i can help you to find an appartment to stay in the center of Grand-Baie where you can get all facilities and meet a lot of people. facilities such as hypermarkets are very near, transport facilities, 30 secs from the beach etc and there are some club very near where you can meet people.

Regards,
Farhaan
