Our Malta plan, any tips or advice?

My American wife & I plan to move to Malta hopefully in the summer.  We've got a rough plan of how we'd like to do it and we'd really appreciate it if someone who's already made the move could give us a few tips.

1) Fly over and stay in a holiday rental.  Is that a good idea?  Can anyone gives us any links to sites that provide this? Our thinking is we can get a feel for the place for three months, sort out residency, and then once that is sorted we might have a better idea of where we want to be.

2) Sort our residency out.

3) Find a more permanent rental.  Has anyone got any links for this or is it better approaching estate agents when we're there?

4) Work!  We only speak English but we would be looking for work in the tourist industry such as bar, waiting, serving, cleaning work etc.  What are the best locations to get by with English and this type of work?

Does this seem like a sensible plan?  Any input would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you! :)

Hi bh73,

the plan sounds do-able.

Your main concern at the beginning will be the residency for yourself and your American wife (family member).

Follow the thread on the new ID card and residency document. Thangs change every few days at the moment. As soon as you know you will be in Malta get an appointment for the application.

As it sounds like you will be without work/job at the beginning they will ask you for proof of financial resources and health insurance coverage.. The guidelines quote the sum of 23.300 € for a married couple. They will probably ask for a bankstatement to support that amount.

Don't bother about long-term renting until you are here. It is no problem finding a place within a week or two.

The main tourist areas are the St.Pauls Bay area and Sliema/Gzira/St.Julians.

Cheers
Ricky

Thanks for your input Ricky!  It's appreciated.  We'll have to get our finances and health insurance sorted then apply.

Do you know of any decent holiday type rental apartment agencies / websites we could use to find a place to stay for the first 3 months?

Thank you for your time!

Hello bh73. :)

Concerning the accommodation, I invite you to post an advert in the Housing in Malta section. It might help.

This page could help as well : Real estate agencies in Malta.

Thank you,
Aurélie

As long as you don't know where you wanna live, and you are "flexible" enough ;) you could try platforms like airbnb for a "short-term" accommodation.
This is also a good opportunity to meet with other people :)

Thanks Aurélie and matm911!  We'll look into them! :)
