from experience I know that if you get the tones right, but may mispronounce the word, people can still figure out what you're trying to say. Tones are important! The great thing is, Chinese people know that their language is hard to learn and they are very helpful and friendly. I've had too many instances to count where someone has helped when if I was lost or couldn't find something in the store...no need to worry about starting an international incident!
