Once you're living in Cuenca, or Ecuador in general, and you're buying in the same stores, groceries around your home, people say to you: "Buenos dias", "Buenas Tardes" or similar greeting phrases.
But in some moment they will add the word: "vecino". Then you status in the comunity has changed.
You're not just a customer anymore, now you're a member of the "barrio" and they will begin to socialize with you talking about the weather and maybe some gossip too.

Good to know. When I was in the Middle East and they thought well of you, they shook your hand much longer than we do in the Americas. Little things mean a lot.

Good observation, in my case it works for dogs too, my vecino's dogs used to bark at me now greets me very happily when I get home
