The Tragedy of GOL Flt. 1907 - Six years after

Today marks the sixth anniversary of the downing of Gol Linhas Aéreas Flight 1907 after being struck by an American owned Embraer Legacy 600 jet piloted by Jan Paul Paladino and Joseph Lepore. One hundred and fifty-four people lost their lives in the crash at the time it was the largest single loss of life in an air disaster in Brazil. This was only surpassed in June of the following year with the tragic crash of a TAM aircraft that ran off the end of the runway in São Paulo killing 199.

To date there has been little that has changed and nobody has been brought to justice for the crash. The victims' families have been unable to find closure to this horrible incident.

Little has changed in Brazil or in the safe handling of air traffic either. There are grave problems with communications systems and radar which leave huge black areas in this country because of the antiquated equipment. Even six years on... the disaster could easily repeat itself.
