Hi Sarah,
First of all, MARHBA. It would be a pleasure to help you. About the language I don't know what to say. It is imperative to learn the language if you want to enjoy the life here and to be independent. How long does it take to learn Japanese? well it depends on your ability to learn new languages. But I can say that after one year you would be able to carry simple conversations and do most of things by your self.
