Welshman looking to move to Canada, any and all help appreciated!

Hi there, I am a 27 year old guy from south west Wales looking to gain a years work visa in lovely Canada for 2013, with the hope of gaining PR in the future.
I have a HND in countryside conservation and a few computing qualifications too. Basically I am in the process of looking for work, trying to decide where exactly in this vast country I would be best suited and meet as many people as possible before heading out there.
As I am sure most of you are aware The applications for visa's for 2013 aren't open yet so at the moment I am just looking for help and advise from other expats from the UK and Canadians on finding work, a place to live, how and where to meet like minded people and generally what the process of moving is like from a Welsh persons perspective.

I look forward to the replies and hope to make some new friends here!
:)

Hello Rich Griff.

Welcome to Expat.com! :)

You can read the various articles in the Canada participative guide. It can help.

Thank you,
Aurélie

Hi Rich,

You should look at the different provinces in Canada to see which is more expensive, type of weather, crime, availability of jobs etc so you can decide where exactly you want to go, & then concentrate on that area.

Example: Vancouver is very expensive compared to Calgary etc.

You can use friends or sites like http://www.kijiji.ca/ to find a nice apartment -just choose your area from the box.

You should try to make contact directly & network with Canadian employers so you can obtain a proper job offer. Then you'll receive what's known as a labour marker opinion, which determines if your employer can legally hire you. Applying for a FSW VISA then coming to look for a job might prove tedious & frustrating.

From all the research I've done, it's best to secure a job BEFORE you come to Canada.

With your qualifications it should be easier to network & find employers.

I know there are a lot of Irish expats in Canada. I'm not Welsh or even British but I hope that helps. :)

hey rich,
i think the advice i would give is try to maximize any contacts you have before you arrive; leverage all the introductions you can prior to coming - if you have friends or family or colleagues that can put you in touch with people here to line up interviews etc. i've tried to help others and the biggest obstacle is getting their first job. we really need skilled people in cda but i constantly hear how they can't even get an interview. i don't say this to be negative but there's been many posts on here stating the same.
cheers, and wish you the best.

There are a ton of articles on the net regarding immigrants and work. Below a few links but I suggest you do your own research and come to your own conclusions.
