Hi I am Theresa I just moved here from Texas to the DR with my husband & 2 kids. My husband is Dominican and is here because he owns a business here in La Romana. Although this is not my first time in the DR, it is very different then visiting. I must add that this is our 2nd attempt to live in the DR. The first was last summer, we lived in Santo Domingo for 3 1/2 months, my husband was not sure he made the right choice of uprooting us from everything we know and putting us in a foreign  city. Honestly, Santo Domingo was not all that bad, a little fast paced and very busy but after all it is a city... I liked the fact that my children attended an English speaking school, down fall to that is they were not learning the native tongue. The other problem for my husband is La Romana is about an hour to an hour in a half drive from where his office is. Anyways we moved back to the states without even a warning, We went to visit for 7 days (ONE WEEK), I packed only enough for that amount of time, my husband announces before the week ended we are staying, he had me enroll the kids in school etc etc.... we purchased a house, but I had a gut feeling this was not going to last so the house never felt like "HOME". We stayed there like 8months, and I got a call from my hubby that we are moving back in 2wks.... So we sold the house, packed everything and now I am HERE! La Romana is very different from SD, and on one hand that’s a good thing but on the other it’s not!! The number one complaint is that I do not speak much of the language, nor do my children and they attend a school that is in all Spanish! My son is doing well, but my little girl is having a hard time. I worry if she is actually learning anything, not in terms of Spanish (we have a tutor for Spanish) but the material. I have to translate all her work for her, Google translate is my best friend ;) I know she will do fine, and will pick it up; I am just being a concerned mommy. Aside from that there are a few things that drive me crazy here, they are things that are tolerable. ;) I just need to learn the language and make some friends!

Living here is much different than a "vacation".  Most folks who do move spend a few months "trying the country on" it is too bad you did not get to do this.
So many come to visit and fall in love with either the contry or a man and then make the plunge.  It sounds like you came for a work situation.
You are doing the right thing in learning the languange and helping the kids do so as well.  ARe there other expats (not necessarily Americans) who speak English in  your area?  Are there any places that you can do some volunteer work as this will help you meet new people as well?  Are there any socaial activities in the comunity like bingo, movie night, steet fairs, bar trivia nights and so on?  Again a good place to meet new folks.
I do wish you luck

Hi Theresa,
Thanks for sharing your story....I am planning to set my roots in DR and my Spanish is very limited.,.ie food, gretings, and body parts.
I started to force myself to learn two to three new words each day.  I guess I better do a bit more than that!

Ive been going to dr 3 to 4 times a year for 5years. Longest stay was 3 weeks. Man did i get homesick and i was having a ball!
I got interested in the culture and the language and the homesickness stopped. I practiced living like dominicans and increased my people network by just sitting outside drinking sodas, watching, walking, and talking everyday. Daily exercise outside released endorphins and gave me energy and i met people too. I rarely see other gringos when im in dr and im lonely only when i want to be. I love the north coast best.
Good luck on your adventure! And stay active because you cant rest well unless you get tired.

Have family send you a US care package. This forum should also help.... gatherings with caring friends cures many ills!

Hi Theresa,

I am in the opposite situation.
I use to be in La Romana and in 3 days i m mooving in Santo.
I have to admit that I am quite nervous about it but I thought it would be easier for me to move in a bigger city (just to learn spanish and for job opportunity)...

I was living in Casa De Campo in La Romana and there is a big american community in there. You can also get involved into many caritative activity and meet some people...

Did you meet anyone in there ?
I will be happy to meet you there when I will be back if you want to.
There is an english school in La Romana did you try it ?

Best Regards

Lily
