Having spent many vacations in Malta, I'm intending to move my base there. I work in the Middle East which means I'm only "home" for 3 months+ in the year. Can anybody tell which would be my best option:

- Rent a studio apartment permanently.

- Put my stuff in storage and rent a place short-term when I'm in Malta.

I've been "hoteling" it all over the Middle East for 7 years so I don't possess a stick of furniture.

Any advice appreciated

Hi MET,

welcome to the forum.

As an EU citizen (German) you can make base anywhere in the EU including Malta. If you are not German it is different.

It is really quite simple.

If you stay less than 3 months in Malta you can stay as a tourist otherwise, officially, you have to apply for ordinary residency. If you stay a bit longer no-one will ask.

Financially you are probally best off renting 'short-term' and putting whatever stuff you have in storage . Most rentals in Malta are furnished. It is the question whether to keep hoteling it or rent short term-)))

One question that comes to mind but you don't ask is about taxes and getting a new passport when the old one expires. It sounds as if you are not resident anywhere , not even in Germany !

Cheers
Ricky
