Dollars vs Pesos

Hi,

A big part of our goal for spending a month in the DR is to try and immerse ourselves as much as possible. We are starting to learn basic spanish, reading about the culture, etc.

As the saying goes money makes the world go around. We would like to get some thoughts on having Pesos vs US$. As part of our immmersion experience we'd like to buy food/groceries, clothes, beer, eat out, cabs, bus, etc and pay in Peso vs dollars.

Is that a "safe bet" or would we be better off sticking to the US$?

If you are going to immerse your selves use pesos. At the smaller shops and stores they will only take pesos, you will get a better price in pesos, all items in larger stores the prices are set in pesos. If you use dollars you will get taken on the exchange rate.
We have been here for 7 years and i never carry anything but pesos.
