How Strict is Vietnam Customs on Medication?

Coming to Vietnam later this year for both vacation and hopefully to get 1-2 year of medication filled (by a friends relative who is a Pharmacist in Vietnam). He said that Vietnam customs might have issue with how much medication you take out (or ship out) of the country. How seriously does Vietnam customs care what type or quantity  of medication or the you take out of the country?

thanks,

John

if you have a prescription I have never known VN to hassle people. If it were queried you could always say Chinese drugs are no good - which we all know - and may be rthe Customs guy would wave you through. Australia, HongKong and American flights are the ones that get particular treatment.

Landing in WuHan would likely be your squeeze point. I usually enter China by land, or fly in to NanNing and of the two the land crossing is stiffer.

Part of the problem is how you will pack them - nicely boxed up or pill containers randomly scattered in your baggage. Neat packaging might suggest resale.

Never thought of VN as a centre for cheap medication exports. Canada, yes.

When I arrived this time, I brought with me a 6 months supply of the medication my family doctor in Australia has me on, - plus anti-malaria pills as well.
Also brought a signed letter from the same doctor, on his letterhead, detailing all medications.
VN Customs at Tan Son Nhat Airport only glanced at my passport and visa - stamped them and sent me on my way - no questions, no baggage inspections - NOTHING !
I had a LOT more trouble just getting my baggage through Oz Customs at Perth International Airport when I was leaving.

Now comes a problem . . .

Now that I'm down to a little over 1 months supply of prescription medications left, I've been trying to find a local supply of the same medication.
Tried some of the specialist doctors and the pharmacy the F/VN Hospital Quan 7 but without any luck.
Off today, with the letter and empty containers,to ask about medications at an on-line supplier in the Sai Gon Trade Center, Ton Duc Thang, Quan 1.

If anyone can suggest the name(s) of somewhere in Sai Gon to buy medication, for mild blood pressure, cholesterol control and prostrate problems, I would be VERY grateful indeed !

My partner and I are off to Phuket and Bangkok for a week starting on 26th May, we have been told to try to find what is needed in Bangkok.
After talking with my doctor back in Oz, it would seem the only other choice open is to return to Australia, THEN the good doctor can provide me with more prescriptions.

Not sure if it makes any difference but I am an American citizen (currently living in Wuhan). I would purchase it in China but some of the medications I can not find (like testosterone). In the US the doctors are of little use since they would only prescribe for only 6 months max (after begging/pleading with them :/) because of risk of lawsuits and stuff.

I've gotten my medication from thailand/bangkok before but wanted to travel some new place and also since the friends relative works there. I knew might have some issues/risks in taking them into China/USA but never thought it might be issue taking them out of vietnam. Would going to Cambodia be better (since planning on going there as part of the trip also)? Afraid fake/counterfeit medication might be more of an issue there though.

Do you have the generic drug names? VN is big on generics and really down on manufacturers names.

PM me if you don't want to publicise the information.
