We are looking to relocate to Costa Rica and wanted to get some advice on looking for private schools for our children.  I have found quite a few in San Jose, but does anyone have any tips on finding GOOD private schools along the northern or southern coastal areas?

Also,  I was hoping for some tips on helping my children adjust to the culture in Costa Rica and the lifestyle.

Thanks!

Hi Lori,

We just spent a year living in Guanacaste near Tamarindo with four kids.  Three attended the Country Day School and one was in pre-school.  Would recommend them all!  - Kelly Kittel

Kelly,

Thanks for the info.  I have seen that school and thought it looked interesting adn worth checking out.  I have one child going into middle school and one into elementary.  Do you have any tips on helping them acclimate into the culture and is the Country Day School mainly Tico or a mixture of cultures?  Also is it a very academic school?

thank you,
Lori

Hi Lori,

I don't have any tips, per se.  There is a large ex-pat culture and my kids adapted very easily and loved it.  It's not as if they will go to a local school; if so, then learning Spanish would be the best advice!  CDSG is a mixture of cultures for sure, lots of them, but it is an American school in CR.  There is also another school nearby called La Paz you could check out.  My kids were in elementary and high school and did very well.  Not as rigorous as the very high performing schools they came from but it was great for a year. You should go and visit before making a decision to move.  I wrote a blog you can check out at www.kittelposse.blogspot.com about life there.  We miss it!  And no need for any of the meds or vaccines you asked about in another post.

Los Delphinas rear Quepos.  Great private school.

We used shipcostarica.com to move to CR with great success, however, we used intermoves-sgcr.com for the return to the states with horrible results. They changed pricing, held our things hostage, and stole several thousand dollars of tools, stereos, etc from us. They refused to do anything about it.

Saw you message and was wondering if you found out any info or if you have made the move yet.  We are making the move in the middle of Feb and I have a 3 year old and one on the way, and my husband will only be there one month after we arrive and then he has to leave for 2 months for work......and I don't speak a lick of spanish yet.  any info would be great help.
thanks,

Regardless of the school of choice, make sure they have MEP credentials. This will ensure that your kids are going to an accredited school and the transcripts are valid world wide.
