OK, I've recently moved to Tripoli and was wondering if there is anywhere that sells English books (fiction etc,.) or English newspapers? I stashed about 10 paperbacks in my suitcase but seem to be getting through them pretty quickly... certainly not enough to last until my next home visit in three months! If there's nowhere to buy some more, does anyone have books that they'd like to swap or loan out?
Hi and welcome...
You could check the following:
1) On the ground floor of the Burg Al Fatah there is a stationery store which sells a few English newspapers and mags. It's next to the entrance to the rear car park;
2) A book store on An Nasr Road in Dahra (opposite the car park & ENI offices), central Tripoli, behind Green Square. Sells a few books in English and also English mags;
3) A book store on Gagaresh Road (right hand side as you go out of town, approx 2km past the smelly roundabout). Same row of shops as the Caracalla coffee shop opposite the old loony bin;
4) We have a load of books in our container (which still hasn't arrived yet!) and pleased to do a book swap.
How long have you been waiting for your container, Sandman?

It was loaded in Lagos at the end of March....I'm told that it's since arrived in Benghazi and awaiting clearence by customs
I had a quick look in the Dahra store at lunchtime today - they had copies of Time & Newsweek but that's all.
Thanks Sandman6 for all the info... will also keep looking around! But remember me when your container arrives!
found this on a new website (www.lookoutlibya.com) my husband referred me to. since I'm not there yet, it may be that some of this is duplication of what Sandman (that font of practical knowledge) posted. for what it's worth:
Books
There are two international bookstores which can be found in Tripoli. Both stores offer a small section of travel, language and general fiction and non-fiction books in English print. The selection is small, however it will keep you going until your next trip home.

Ah yes, the Shellite site...
Anyone counted how many times the word "Shell" appears on that site?
More like www.lookoutcareinthecommunity
I recommend to you the First September Street Library shop
I cannot remember the name
You will find books in different languages not only in English
Sandman,
since I'm not there, I don't get it.
as an info source I am not generally impressed with the lookoutlibya site. but it says it is new, so maybe more later.
this expatLibya forum was virtually nonexistant when I first signed up last spring. now, thanks to you and Goeff and a few othters, it's become just about the best info site I've found.

Hi smart1, does the immigration staff doesn't go through books you bring in?Just wondering if it's like in Middle east that they sequester even paperbacks that has a picture that shows off shoulder or backless of a woman...Are they more lenient there on these...bringing reading materials?
I'm not yet there so just getting a hint of how's things are...
dazzlingjaney wrote:Hi smart1, does the immigration staff doesn't go through books you bring in?
That's correct dazzling...
They also go through your CD and DVD collection...
I guess that's all my death metal CD's and porn collection down the swanee
I'm informed that the way to speed things up is to make an inventory of all books, CD/DVD by author, title etc, preferrably in fookin Arabic. No $hit!

Bonjour Smart1,
I am quite new in Libya, and just move from a flat in Regata to a new House. I found some Englishes books when packing. I check this evening when I am back from the office, and let you know tomorow the titles and authors.
Amicalement.
Philippe
(Sorry about my English, I know I have to improve it)
We're hoping that our books will be returned from Customs next week - we're willing to do a few swaps with people ahrmmm
Sandman and Phillippe
That would be great guys... just let me know and thanks again!
I have got a few books here that I am done with and would love to do some swapping! Count me in please!
Also, just an FYI, I brought in my stuff from Canada with zero problems. We did provide them with an itemized list but made a few "oopsies" about "forgetting" to include certain titles such as Rushdie's Satanic Verses for example. All the music and literature we packed made it through.
And do they sell English baby books in these shops? I haven't been to any yet, so just asking where to go first.
Check out this new English Bookshop

I have a few books although they're not fictional and some newspapers that I picked up last week when leaving manchester. You're welcome to any of them.

I would advise anyone who likes to read a lot to buy themselves an e-book reader, not expensive and you can store as many as 500 books on one. You download a selection of online books and then copy them to your e-reader (it is about the size of a paperback) and really easy to use - simples

Last time I was home I saw someone on the tube using one - I was amazed! I've been away from home for a while so never knew these existed. I'm a major bookworm so will definitely be getting myself one - it will save on shipping costs during my frequent moves .
Just checked Argos and they have a sony model for 199... does that sound like a good price?
Hi everyone,
I'm leaving Libya at the end of the month and have quite a few fiction books which I'm selling for 5-10 LD each. Titles are mainly crime fiction (Tess Gerritson, James Patterson, Ian Rankin etc). If anyone is interested please contact me.
getonthebus, you should post in the Libya classifieds
If anyone buys an ereader try getting some books off ebay to start you off . I got 500 books of well know authors for £20.

No idea of the price of one as my wife (LSscotland) bought it for me maybe she could answer ?
sounds about the right price. There are different models though. One I got was only £150 . It doesn't come with memory stick slot and isn't touch screen though. Have a search on web as john lewis and whs smith had some good deals before
Hi all,
A new bookstore selling English books has opened just this week (1st Jan) in Hai Al Andalus on the same street as the French School, in between Gorgi and Gargaresh. It is a small store however it sells more English books than have been available previously and a greater variety of topics. They even sell Twilight for those interested! The best part is that they offer to order in specific books of interest and may have more luck than us expats who have to wait months for shipments to come in!
Happy reading!

That's the one.
Also if you are a member of BCWAGS (apply through bcwags.net - previously only open to British and Commonwealth members and their spouses but now open to other nationalities, although only a small percentage of the total group may be non Brit or Commonwealth), they have a book swap club. Great network if you can manage to get in on it.
