Moving to Edinburgh or Aberdeen

Hi there. My name is Natacha. I'm currently living in Belgium.
I'm new to this forum and I need some advice before moving to Scotland.
I will move to Scotland in April 2012 but I have not decided yet whether to move to Edinburgh or Aberdeen. It will depend on the following factors:
-Social contact: how easy is it to meet people;
-Both nature (I love walking) and cultural life nearby (I enjoy museum, architecture, exhibitions…);
-Job opportunities : I speak English, French and Dutch fluently and have good notions of Italian and German; I have work experience in customer care and support (I have experience in giving training, coaching; I'm currently working for a railway engineering company where I give organizational support and consolidate information to assure their reporting). It doesn't necessarily have to be that kind of job; I want to know if I have any chance to get a job with my profile.
-Affordable accommodations, preferably not far from the city centre and under 500 GBP PM; I wouldn't mind sharing the flat
Can you give me some advice on this ?
Thanks a lot

Hi Natacha,
I would recommend Edinburgh slighly above Aberdeen. Edinburgh is a bigger city and attracks more people from all around the world so there are more opportunities for socialising. There are also more job opportunities specifically for what you currently do. Your language skills have definite potential for other possibilities.

Your monthly budget is strong even for Aberdeen or Edinburgh (which both have some of the highest rents) but not so good if you go for a single bedroom flat - I recommend sharing. Its much more common to share in Scotland and the renting contracts are easier than Belgium. Edinburgh is also slightly better for culture, but does not have such impressive nature close by as Aberdeen. But close to Edinburgh there are still very nice coastlines, hill walks etc.

Let me know if you want me to be more specific about anything.

Thanks a lot for your advice Drew. Since my last post I made up my mind and I will go for a flatsharing in Edinburgh.

Hello Natacha

Hope my post won't disappear again this time.

check out a website I discovered recently which explains everything about relocating to Edinburgh. I think you should find all you need. It is [moderated: same link posted everywhere]

All the best.:)

Hi,Thor 12. Thanks a lot for for this useful link.:top:

I'd recommend Edinburgh over Aberdeen for sure. The weather in Aberdeen is atrocious. Quite wet, very Northern Europe. The weather in Edinburgh is much better, lots of sunshine, pretend rain (I've seen sheet rain once here in 8 years!)

Something to keep in mind though about Edinburgh. If you live in North Edinburgh, close to the sea,it's fine because it's below the snowline. But above it, beware. Snow? Lovely to look at, lovely to see, but not outside my front door please. Why? Firstly, because above the snow line is freezing in winter compared to nearer to the sea. Plus the council really only make a good effort to snow plough the main roads rather than side streets. So last winter, for instance, in an area north of the Royal Infirmary, none of the roads in that area got cleared. The residents literally couldn't drive to their homes from the main road. No joke, people were having to dig out the road - the road mind you - by hand. People here don't have to clear the footpath outside their building, or salt the footpaths in anticipation of snow. And the council doesn't clear the footpath of ice either except if it gets bad in the city centre.

Another winter, Balerno, a lovely area in the south west of Edinburgh, well above the snowline, got snowed in. For six weeks! Go out to Midlothian? - cheaper rents and nice homes, but they regularly have to close their schools for a few days here and there during the winter months because everyone is snowed in.
for the way britain deals with snow in general, think a small rural place, not much money around, in Eastern Europe somewhere. And they probably still deal with it better than here!
