Dear all,

I'm a student Communication & Multimedia Design in the Netherlands. Development organization named Hivos asked us to design an aid kit to help women working in Maquiladoras (garment industry) in Honduras improving their (working) conditions.

To be able to do that, I will need some in sight information that comes from a source that is closer to these women than global media messages.

Is there anyone I could ask some questions about working in Maquiladoras and the lives of these women?

I wish I could do an interview with a women who has experience working in a maquiladora. I'm trying to make a day in the life of a women.

Kind regards,

Kimberley

Hi georgeiap,

Thanks for your reaction!
Right now I'm at home going to sleep. In the Netherlands it's 7 hours later.

I really would like to know how the live of a women working in a maquiladora looks like. For example does she has any hobby's or who takes care of her children while she is working.

I read lots about the (worse) maquiladoras online but I want real in sight information. Unfortunatly I can't go to Honduras myself.

I hope to get in touch with you soon.

Greetings Kimberley

What would be the ideal situation is to get in contact with a women who has experience working in a maquiladora. But I think that's impossible because they don't have internet access.

There are a couple of things I would like to know:

1. Where do they live, and how do they get to their work? (walking/by bus)
2. If the woman has children, who takes care of them while she is working?
3. Do they have acces to any kind of media like radio, tv, newspapers or internet?
4. Do they know what (labour)rights they have?
5. At the age of 30 they become to old and most of the time get fired, what other jobs are available for her?
6. An article says that 14 year old girls really want to work in a maquila and even get a fake ID if their to young:
"For these young women, the factory is the door to a whole new world. It offers them the opportunity for new experiences and adventures free of parental control—a novelty not permitted them within the family structure."
Is their home situation so bad that she wants to get away from her parents and work in bad conditions?
7. What do they do in their free time?

I understand you cannot give answers to all of my questions but any information is more than welcome.

Thank you so much.

Kimberley
