District 01 is the very centre of town. Not many places to stay, and those are very expensive (plan on at least S$1500/month for a room or $S5000/month for an apartment there). It's better to stay further away, where you pay roughly half of that for rent. Don't worry, public transport is very efficient, fast and reasonably cheap.
