Dominican/Caribbean Spanish

In your experience or observation, if people notice that you are struggling a bit with Spanish, are they likely to switch from Dominican Spanish to a more generic pronunciation? Most of the Dominican bloggers I've watched speak pretty "standard" Spanish so I'm wondering how common it is for people to switch back and forth.

Also, if you know of any good online resources -- blogs, TV shows, whatever -- for listening to Dominican Spanish, the more heavily accented the better, I would love to know about them. I've seen explanations of how it works, but that's a far cry from actually being able to understand! I could use the practice. I'm finally getting my first exploratory trip in October, so pretty excited.

Thanks for any tips!

No you won't find locals switching to better Spanish. The majority here speak Dominican, they speak faster than fast and often swallow letters!

That's what I was afraid of! Oh well, nothing for it but to jump right in I guess ;-)

Thanks for the reality check.
