Language tips

I would like advise how to best learn Italian

Hello micheledgreer,

Welcome to Expat.com 1f600.svg

Could you please clarify your reasons for wanting to learn Italian? Is it for academic purposes, work, travel, or another reason?

To learn Italian effectively, begin by setting clear, achievable goals. Combine structured courses with language learning apps. You can explore some recommended apps here > https://www.expat.com/en/learn-a-language.html

Additionally, practice with native speakers through language exchange opportunities. You might consider posting an advert in the Italy classified ads under the language exchange category.

Consistent practice is key, so try to integrate the Italian into your daily routine.

Speak it, @micheledgreer! I used a private Tutor (paid for by my employer) and then used DuoLingo but most of my learning was done by using or trying to use the language in everyday situaitons. In many cases, when I try to speak Italian, the locals usually answer in English as it is obvious I'm struggling(!). In that case, I often ask them to stick to Italian because I'm learning the language. If you have regual interactions with anyone (local grocery store, bakery, restaurant or whatever) tell them only to speak to you in Italian. Over time, you'll get more comfortable (well, less embarrassed really!)
