Hi everyone!

My name is Rachel and I recently received my visa to Portugal. I am going to school at ISCTE and applied for the year-long visa type E.  I just received my passport back today and was notified that the visa is only applicable for four months. I was under the assumption that I applied for temporary stay up to one year. Everything on my application was for one year and now all the visa documents say 120 days with only two entries within that time.

I received another document about setting up a residency permit once I arrive in Lisbon, but the link provided only tells me "appointment does not exist" with no other options. Has this happened to anyone else?

I am just really confused because I did not apply for the residency application. I want to make sure I am doing this correctly.

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Rachel, Welcome.

It seems that your visa is an E4 visa and is for those who want to study for less than a year. It is a temporary stay visa.

A study visa for more than one year is a residence visa (D4).

According to the PT Ministry of Foreign Affairs website:

https://vistos.mne.gov.pt/en/national-v … orary-stay

Temporary stay visas allow entry and stay in Portugal for less than a year. Temporary stay visas are valid during the entire stay and allow for multiple entries.

Residency visas allow two entries and is valid for a period of 4 months. During that time, the holder of a residency visa is required to request a residency permit with the Immigration and Border Services (SEF/AIMA).

This contradicts what is written in your document, so I suggest you contact a Portuguese consulate in the US.
