Im currently living in the Boca Chica area of Dominican Republic.  I need to return to the US as my job is requiring fulltime in the office. My landlord said if I break the lease he would file a lien on my passport so that i cant leave the country. Can this civil matter affect my immigration status?

@kobymglass1

Yes, it has happened. However, if you pay the entire lease out they may have no case.

However, not a lawyer but would advise obtaining legal advise.

It's likely an empty threat as I stated in the other thread!

@planner agree most are but it did actually happen to a very close friend of mine several years back. The landlord was also a lawyer for the courts in SDQ and filed the papers. However, he was allowed to leave but to reenter he had to first handle the pending judgement for the condo

He got a judgement.  That's the difference honey.  So first 90 days in arrears, then a court filing, then the hearing, then the judgement and then a lien!

Yes it can happen.  The likelihood is very low I think!

Just leave and let them keep the deposit. Leases get broken all the time by both sides. Until the laws shift more in favor of owners, the tenants are pretty well protected. Most leases state if broken you forfeit deposits.
