Meet-Up in João Pessoa PA, March 1 - 5, 2024

01/20/24 I've already let some friends in Paraíba and nearby Pernambuco know about this, but today seems like a good time to pick up anyone in the area that I don't know about yet.

My husband and I will be in João Pessoa March 1 to 5, he to participate in a concurso, and both of us to check the city out as a possible place to live.  Nothing structured, very informal, but if you're an expat living in the area and would like to come hang out with us some day for lunch, dinner, or sightseeing while we're there, we'd enjoy meeting you.  Spouses/significant others welcome, Portuguese and English spoken.  Let me know how to contact you with details as they come together.

I'd show up, but I'm stuck back in Canada until August.

JP looks like a great place to live IMHO, based solely on YT videos about it, and numerous visits to other similar locations in the area.

Looking forward to it...

@Peter Itamaraca, @abthree I would love but cannot attend the meet up as I have a wedding state-side to attend that weekend.  Just curious though, how far is Joao Pessoa from Ilha da Itamaraca?  Looks like driving via PE-49 and 101 leads directly there in about 2 - 3 hours?

@Pablo888

Actually a little quicker than that - maybe 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic, and exactly where in JP you want to end up...

Thank you.  Good to know.

I'm in.

Enjoy the wedding, and I'm hopeful that there will be other times.  Whenever our travels take us to a place where I know that some people who are active on the site live nearby, I want to try to get some meet-ups going.

@abthree i'd love to. but i only come back in july. pop me up if you are there. i m living around bessa in JP.

Sorry that we'll miss you!  We're planning on staying just down the beach, around Cabo Branco.

02/06/24  Update on the Meet-Up in João Pessoa.  Looks like a group of us will be getting together for drinks and dinner near the beach at Bessa on the evening of Friday, March 1, 2024.  Expats will be coming from Paraíba and Pernambuco, and anyone who's interested and will be in the area is welcome.  We have a WhatsApp group set up for planning that folks who decide to come can join.

My husband and I won't be returning to Manaus until the 6th, so we'll be exploring the area and welcome the company of new friends as we do it.

Just to float this topic back to the top, this is happening.

Some of us are gathering on Friday (that's tomorrow).

Interested?

Sorry I will miss you tomorrow.  However, I have plans to be in NE Brazil  in the near future.  Hope to see you all later on....

@abthree Is the IPTU the only tax that is paid on a house in Brazil? assuming theres no HOA fees?

Hi everyone! Len (Leonard) here, originally from Portland, OR, now João Pessoa.

Matt just notified me about the meet-up. Fortunately I don't have anything planned tonight, so I'd love to attend. I'll see if my wife (Julia) can also come.

I'm assuming this will be at the S&B in Cabo Branco, not Manaira.

19h. (Me, trying to be Brazilian about the time format.)

@McLen

Hi Len!

Prazer. Sim. 19h. Sal e Brasa. Cabo Branco

03/01/24 Fantastic, Len!  Looking forward to seeing you both.

Hey there former Portland person. I am in Portland a few times a year, I will say hi for you next time I pass through. I used to do layovers there, shopping, Saturday Market, and all of that good stuff, but I have stopped that now and just pass through, often to the train station and onto Amtrak.  Man, has the downtown changed over the past 5 years

03/01/24    Thanks to  all who came:  it was an evening to remember with friends old and new, in the easternmost city of the Americas!

As far as I know yes, at least in cities.  This excludes the taxes on property transfer payable at purchase.

Thank you all that were able to come. New connections were made, others strengthened.

Al, you rock! Your idea/suggestion turned into a great event!

You can also be liable for an SPU annual marina tax if your house is located within a certain distance of any tidal waters, as determined in 1831. Also there is an annual charge for bombeiros. That's it apart from taxes on purchase...

@john8670

Bom dia!  Depending on the house or apartment, we have seen there is sometimes a HOA monthly Condominium Fee.  Also, here in the city (João Pessoa) we also have to pay TCR- Annual trash collection.
