Well the truth is that this state as much of the US depends highly on the car. Unlike bigger cities like Washington and NY, the cities and towns in NC do not have a weel developed public transportation network since the demand is very low. I live in Greensboro and there is a public bus system. Not very nice to use because it may take for ever to get to where you need to and you may not feel very comfortable with the people that usually make use of this system. Your best bet is to get a car, which although not new could be in good shape, if you want to be sure you can move around.
