Embassy Warns Expats to Stay Off Dating Apps

Eight USA Americans died under 'suspicious' circumstances

in Colombia during November and December .. and as a result

the U.S. Embassy is telling visitors and Expats to stay off

dating apps.

The warning includes advice to avoid isolated venues such

as hotel guest rooms.  Expats are increasingly invited to

public places such as restaurants only to end up victimized,

robbed and sometimes killed.

Robberies were up 200 percent in the last quarter of 2023,

according to the U.S. Embassy.

A YouTuber named DCBornRob has been publicizing the

deaths of some Expats who were allegedly exposed --

likely overexposed -- to a drug named scopolomine which

can put a person into a zombie-like state.  They then

cooperate with bad actors who steal their money and make

unauthorized ATM withdrawals, with the victims waking up

hours or days later in a daze.

The Embassy says most of the eight recent deaths

occurred in Bogotá, Medellin and Cartagena.  The Embassy

says dating crimes are likely under-reported because

the victims are too embarrassed to disclose their experiences

to police.

I definitely hope this is not news to anyone here...

Digitarius

@ChineduOpara Wow bad is it  since you've been there quite awhile.

ChineduOpara

@Digitarius Well my understanding is that the main place where these things happen is Medellin and - to a lesser extent - Cartagena. I live in "flyover city" Barranquilla, with fewer expats, so it's far less common here.

@Digitarius How bad.? All depends on a persons IQ

People should be able to go on dates, find a partner without being robbed the moment you spend some time alone together

Israel and Palestine should stop fighting. Russians should stop drinking so much vodka. Batman should stop being so serious. Americans should stop having mass shootings. Colombians should stop LDFG'ing and Scoping/Robbing 😅

People "should" do a lot of things... but, well, they continue doing it because it's in their myopic and selfish self-interest.

If the world was fair, most Simple Good Men and Women would find each other within their Biologically Prime Reproductive Ages, partner up, and create strong family units within supportive communities.

This is a Basic Human Need, and it would be NICE if EVERYONE had a genuinely fair shot at it.

But the world isn't fair. Therefore, here we are with a huge (almost "National Security Threat" huge) number of single and lonely people - majority of whom are not Bad People nor criminals - running around being fleeced by dating apps, and risking being drugged, robbed, or even murdered. All for sake of TRYING to find a legitimate partner, find romantic intimacy, reproduce, or just have a genuine companion.

World Hunger is one thing, we can solve that if our Corporate Overlords really wanted to.

Housing is another thing... we can throw money at it.

But THIS... Belonging, Love, Intimate relationships, friends, companionship, community... THIS is unfortunately one of the most difficult Human Basic Needs to meet.

Alas, the world isn't fair, and the Cosmos isn't under any obligation to make sense to any of us 🤷🏿‍♀️

I love good laugh.

I also tend to be as pragmatic as I am blunt.

Only men who are looking for a quick shag without paying a pro (but are too stupid to see the obvious danger) are going to be victims of this.

That hardly excuses the killers, but at least I know I'll never have to worry about this type of crime. The same goes for all half reasonable men.

ChineduOpara

@Fred I hope you realize that not all men are looking for "a quick shag". If they were, well, brothels exist.

If you read some of the other comments, you'll see that many of us are/were seeking legitimate/honest partners for monogamous and mutually supportive relationships (including marriage and family).

But (unfortunately) due to the LDFG nature of Colombian culture, almost all of social media, dating apps, libraries, parks, and just about everywhere that a person could approach women, are full of Bad Actors who can -- and sometimes do - take advantage of such soft-hearted single men. At the very least, the women lead the men on and deceive them out of money. But other times (mostly in Medellin), it could lead to drugging, robberies, or death.

It's easy to victim-blame when you don't know peoples' backstories or true desires... but only follow the "popular complaints" or "typical gringo" sexpat stories.

Try having some understanding and Human Empathy.

@where2go stay off the dating apps, come here and live  , learn the language, volunteer, have hobbies and sports  get to know people.

If you are really desperate  for sex , find an "amiga con derechas" you trust or find a prepago on an established site, pay a tustworthy taxi driver to be your " guarda de espaldas" take her to an STD clinic to get rapid tested and make sure she knows the taxi driver is.taking care of you outside while you are inside doing the " dirty deed"

It will cost quite  a bit more  , but save you getting " scoped" or robbed and prevent you from coming up with STDs
