Hi if I want to travel to the south in my northern Cyprus car, could you tell me what documents I need and also how long could I stay in south

visiting my brother

pete21

Hi, yes you can travel, but since Brexit it has become alot of hassle if you are a Brit.

You need an authorising document (colloquially referred to as a TOM) and this can only be obtained at the Nicosia car crossing from a famously unpleasant old man in a booth just after the Greek Cyp passport check.  You then go to the next booth to get third party insurance for the south (insurance for a month or up to a year).

You can only get the TOM document between 0800 and 1430 on weekdays (and not public holidays or weekends). You get the document simply by showing your TRNC vehicle reg doc and your driving licence (if you only have a TRNC licence and are not Turkish Cyp then you will be refused). If you are EU or Cypriot then you get the TOM for a year.  If you are non EU you get the chit only until midnight on the day of issue.

Thus, strictly speaking, you can not stay overnight with your brother if you are non EU. In reality many take their chances.  You will have insurance but the validity, or otherwise, of that insurance with a TOM that is a day or two past the date is not 100% clear. On asking the insurance rep they say it is valid, but the cover note they give you says it has to be accompanied by a current TOM chitty.

So, to cut a long story short; you can travel but only via that Nicosia crossing a massive inconvenience if say, living in the karpas and visiting someone in Paralimni!  It is almost unbelievable that the British High Commission have not managed to get this ridiculous one day restriction lifted as it seems to make absolutely no sense. Many believe it is a stark example of how the British HC does not care about citizens living in the north.

@pete21hello I have a question. I am an Amarican citizen living in North Cyprus and today I was denied of getting the road tax document with my car being a North registered car. Is there any solution to this? They didnt even offer me a day pass as stated. Maybe, can I even buy a car in the south and registered it there without a residency?

Toon

Why would there be a problem taxing a north registered car in the north... Or did you mean south

I don't think it's possible to buy a south registered car and tax in the north ...it would need to be exported to the north via one of the south recognised ports of exit and into north recognised ports of entry and pay the required import taxes etc

Hi, let me explain. I live in the north with a north registered car. Last week we drove our car to the south side for thefirst time(I used to cross with friends car or by foot before)

Border agent asked us to stop by and get insurance and to pay road tax. When I went to pay road tax for South the gentleman stated that I count not get it because I am not a EU or a Cypriot citizen. So unfortunately this eliminates the possibility to drive our own car.

I want to know if anyone knows any other alternatives?  I even thought maybe I can buy a cheapy car in the south, but I'm not sure if I can buy one without a residency.

This seems strange as drivers from the South can easily and regularly drive their cars in the north as long as they have the insurance purchased at the border....  Have you tried a different border crossing.. in case its a just a case of misinterpretation of the law.....

Can't say I've heard of this before..

May I suggest that you get in touch with a man called Issy Atahasan in the north he's extremely knowledgeable about all things TRNC he's on a Facebook page called North Cyprus Heartbeat.

Good luck

Toon

Am sure you can buy a car in the south without residency here . There are thousands of non resident holiday home owners here who have bought cars.....There is always a way too do these things...

However  you won't be able to take it permanently to the north without exporting it and importing it into the TRNC

You can buy a south car without residency,  register it there and then leave it is south to use on your trips there.  That an American cannot even get a one day road a authorisation document (TOM) is v odd but I heard same from others.
