Hello everyone we are new here we are Rough and ready adventures on YouTube and we are currently documenting our journey from start to finish moving from the uk to Bulgaria and renovating our property if you have any questions please feel free to ask away ☺️
@elisehardy2001
Congrats on your recent house purchase, and good luck with your Bulgaria adventures!
@gwynj
HI I have been reading your postings and I am very impressed and respectful how you have made your life in Bulgaria, always positive, always finding solutions to challenges . On top of it all - you are such a good resource of information for expats. Thank you! You remind me of myself- I came to America years ago( knowing English though), got more education than I had in Bulgaria, got a good job , family and made a happy life here. I integrated in this country very well. I have lived more time in USA than in Bulgaria!
I am going back home now to be with elderly relative. Unfortunately every time I go there I feel like a foreigner despite that I speak Bulgarian. I have to always ask for everything family, friends( I feel lucky luckily one of them is a lawyer), my university co-students. I am doing fine but I like to point out that there are challenges sometimes and I like this forum very much- I am learning a lot about my own country and what people think.
It is Thanksgiving day tomorrow and I am saying thank you again to you personally and to all nice people on this forum.
Hi Elise! You bought a beautiful house. I saw that one listed, it has so much potential. I hope you have a wonderful Bulgarian adventure,
@elisehardy2001
Welcome aboard Elsie, I look forward to watching your Bulgarian adventure come to life on the big screen via YouTube. I never tire of other expats journeys & experiences. We made the same leap 11 years ago & have no regrets 😊( lived amongst the renovations, and came out the other side )
Enjoy & embrace, Bulgaria has so much to offer 😉
@gwynj thankyou very much

@Jules999hi thankyou and congratulations on making it through i can only start to imagine how tough it is living amoungst renovations thats the scary part we have to come next year ☺️
@elisehardy2001
Congratulations on becoming a multiple property owner overnight! Wishing you all the best with your property ventures in Bulgaria.
@elisehardy2001 your videos made me decide to take the plunge and buy somewhere over there. I am going to buy as a holiday home initially to renovate over a number of years and then try to figure out the visa. In the mean time working back in the UK living the van life. 2024 im going for it!
@elisehardy2001
Where in Bulgaria 🇧🇬 did u buy, and how much do u spend a month on bills, food etc, without counting money spent on reno, and for how many people? How do u like it there so far? Thank you in advance for your answer, and good luck 👍. As it is almost the end of this year, let me wish u a wonderful 2024. May it be better 🙏

I have done the same thing you have where I pair the supposit or and I pay monthly payments I have a bank account where I can get mine money from our way around the world you don't need a bank account in Bulgaria it'd be best to stick with an English bank account
@an3895509
You need a bank account in Bulgaria so you can transfer cash and then you can get cash from the ATM .. if you use a brit card they will sting you for a charge .. even if you get a wise card ,(recommended for cheap transfers at good rates ) you can only get just over 400lev out a month without getting charged by wise .. I suspect that the BG ATM may charge you for doing it anyway.. iv never had to try yet ..
Take a look at wise they are very competitive there pre paid accounts are very good an they have an app for android phone which makes it easy
Phil
That's interesting, Phil! I'm sure Wise used to allow the equivalent of 400 GBP per month withdrawal from an ATM without charge, but I checked and you're right, it's now 200 GBP. That must have reduced that when they changed the withdrawal fees earlier in the year.
I've never been charged by a Bg ATM. The trick to avoid that with Wise is to carry a BGN balance. Also when paying using a POS machine, make sure to choose to pay in BGN to avoid conversion fees.
I still use and recommend them.

For those of us seeking to move to Bulgaria permanently, a Bulgarian bank account may be a necessity to get the long term visa.
But if you're not hoping to stay longer than 90 days per 180, yes, staying with a UK account or something like Wise or Revolut is far less trouble.

-@an3895509 your a fair way from me
im in england too until the spring when we come. i was coming in jan but after the snow last weekend ive had second thoughts haha
your houses look lovely on you tube
@janemulberry
Hi Jane
Yes it was £250 up till about 6 months ago .. thanks for the info about not getting charged at ATM.. I never tried it out yet .. hope I never have to as it would be the last hope lol
Iv learn a valuable lesson about BG banks an how one person can really mess u up and another bank employee wonders why eek it's frightening how often I read about other subject like buying and registering cars can differ dependent who your dealing with in the same place .. I also have my funds in stocks with wise .. the investing house is BlackRock one of America's biggest funds.. so far so good .. yes they go up an down but so far never been negative .. currently over a 1000 lev up ... It's quite nice when it's going up cos you spend an your balance often stays the same lol .. I have the same with my Philippines peso an thats up 10000 peso .. which is only about £160 but then I only have about £1400 in my account .. heavy spending on our house in Philippines .. now it just a case of sending money to my card when the rate us good ... The pound is riding high right now against the dollar and the euro .. so just waiting for my pension to invest some even the pound is slowly increasing . Could hav got 2.268 lev today but no money left in the tank this month lol
It's a plus in some ways to see the GBP stronger, though not so good for me as a fair chunk of my income is in USD!
Yes I see your point... Do you set alarms to give you emails when rates hit your targets ... I do it makes it easy .. it will change because it's how they make there money manipulating markets.. have you ever noticed at dinnertime the rate drops .. its traders selling to lock in profits . I often like to buy around 2am UK time cus that's when the Asian markets open. Done some good transfers pounds to Philippines lol peso.
My focus now is on building up my Philippines peso account ready for next year's 3 months holiday there so my wife can bond with her family and I can escape a European autumn the UK is generally windy damp and rainy lol
Sounds like a good plan to avoid the least pleasant time of year here!
I set up automatic transfers in Wise to only move USD to GBP when the rate is good enough. I also need to get more BGN in cash to pay the builders. I check the GBP to BGN rate daily with the place I use for travel money, but it's still not back to what it was last time I bought leva in late summer.
@an3895509 Hey Susy,,What a good chance to give ypur kids a new start away from the disunited kingdom! How did you get around the post brexit Visa problems,, we've learned on this site you have to show evidence of a monthly pension even if you have a few bob in the bank ,thanks George.
