Malta Work Visa Rejection: Lessons Learned and Future Steps

Hi everyone,

I recently applied for a work visa in Malta, but unfortunately, my application got rejected, and I wanted to share my experience and seek some advice from the community.

The reason stated for my visa rejection was "reasonable doubts as to the reliability of the statements made as regards [visa application]." Looking back, I now understand that the issue might have arisen during the interview process. The officer asked me if I had paid the agency that handled my job application on behalf of the Maltese recruiter. To my dismay, I decided to lie and denied making any payment, as the agency had advised me not to disclose this information. In retrospect, I believe this deception might have contributed to my visa denial.

I later attempted to appeal the decision, but it appears that I will have to wait for a year until my initial "approval in principle" letter expires before any further action can be taken. This waiting period is quite frustrating, but I understand that it's part of the process.

At this point, I am torn between two options:

Reapplying with Honesty: I wonder if it would be wise to reapply for the work visa and this time, be completely honest about the payment I made to the agency in Tunisia. While telling the truth might have its risks, it could also demonstrate transparency and integrity.

Applying from Another Schengen Country: Another option I'm considering is attempting to enter Malta from another Schengen country with a visit visa. This could allow me to explore opportunities while being physically present in the country, but I am unsure if this approach is feasible or advisable.

I am eager to hear from anyone who has faced a similar situation or has knowledge of Malta's visa processes. Your advice and insights could be invaluable in guiding my next steps.

Please feel free to share any relevant information, tips, or suggestions. I am grateful for your support.

Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your experiences.

May I ask why you chose Malta rather than explore opportunities in any other country? Do you have family or friends here?

Were you offered a particularly good career opportunity? Unless you find a well paid position, the cost of living compared to salaries paid can make life in Malta quite difficult.

If you have not already done so, please research well. With the raising costs of renting accommodation, food and other basic needs, even for a single person it is difficult to survive on a gross salary of less than €25,000 per year.

Thank you for the response buddy.

I have decided to work in Malta, primarily due to its proximity to my home country and my strong preference for warm weather. The choice has nothing to do with payment or I will be better considering other destinations; it is solely driven by my desire to work abroad.  And Malta was the first opportunity I got.
