Due to the requirement for health insurance in Colombia for foreigners and my age (75) I am wondering if we should instead apply for Mexican residency through the consulate here in Medellin? Has anyone worked with facilitators here? My Spanish is basic and it would be hard to be sure I could explain everything the interviewer wants to know in Spanish. Your thoughts and ideas are most welcome!

So, you are saying you don't want health insurance in Colombia?  Have you estimated what your monthly EPS premium would be? Do you already have your temporary residency visa?

I never heard of a temporary residency visa it's either a Migrant Visa or a Resident Visa and that is permanent, although with the new Law it requires you to trespass it every 5 years and get a new cedula as well. A friend here in Pereira who had a Resident Visa was not aware of the new changes that came about last October, so because the time expired had to start the process from the beginning all over again with new documents its a money making machine this cancelleria.

Oh yeah. The first M visa for pensioners is typically applied for using travel insurance, so I have heard.  The subsequent renewals can be made with EPS, according to James L and associates.

if you are applying for a residency, and you’re having trouble with your communication, I do know someone that can help you through the process.

What city are you most affiliated with?

Dear Tortoise,

Due to your limited Spanish and unfamiliarity

with the bureaucracy, you're an ideal

candidate for hiring a visa specialist

or an immigration attorney, as are 90 percent

of  visa seekers.

The law firm whose paralegal enabled me to obtain

a visa five years ago in Colombia is Langon Law,

langoncolombia.com.  It doesn't matter what city

you are in during the process.

As for the concept of going through a Mexican

consultate in the Paisa capital, if you entered

Colombia as a USA citizen, don't expect

the Mexicans to process your visa paperwork.

No we want very much to live in Colombia but the newest requirements for temporary residency include an insurance policy. Here is where I need the knowledge. Do we only have to buy an international policy until we have residency and are then eligible for the Colombian insurance that is very affordable?  Is there an age limit? My husband is 55 and I am 75. How might I find the current information I need for what documents will be required?  Thanks so much for your reply.

@Tortoise Unbroken I actually have the exact same question. Thanks.

Tortoise Unbroken

Great! I hope we can both find clear instructions as to what is required.

Which visa do you plan to apply for?

Being that you are in Medellin, and there a number of private entities dedicated to processing visas in Poblado, why haven't you gone to see one of them? I would think you could appear as a prospective client and ask a question about the insurance requirements, without paying anything upfront.
