Does anybody knows some good models, I have seen Yamaha Sirius new one going from 17 milion dongs, is that original Yamaha or some local knock off?

Thanks+

I've searched for this earlier in the year.

In the end I went for something bigger, but this is a pretty good website I stumbled upon: link.

As per Vietnamese custom it's Honda first :)

Price for that Yamaha sounds about right, but better stick to bigger dealers to avoid Chinese knock offs. I've been told it's very hard to see the difference.

Yamaha Sirius is genuine Yamaha see here how ever it is bigger than 50cc (113cc) so you cant drive it legally ( many tourists hire bikes with no VN licence - however best check the cost of a careflight home before you make the move of doing a road trip with no medical cover).

Also you as a tourist you can buy a bike but can't register it so you will be driving around with no plates unless a local does the "bluecard" and gets the plates from the local police.

@RCP79  What is quality of these Chinese knock-offs? Poor?

narcrepellant2525

@AndyHCMC  Driving without plates will immediately attract  attention of the traffic police hehe

If its from a Honda Head its a main Honda dealer. However its a 110cc and you need a VN local to register it in their name, and you dont have a licence to drive it.

Do you intend to try to buy a 110cc or bigger bike, do you know a VN who will register it in their name? if not you are not going to get far buying one.

Ok, I assumed he had a TRC.

As a tourist I would go for a second hand.

In HCM there are a couple of dealers geared to selling second hand to expats.

A lot of the models in your link are really for smaller riders.  It's really unfortunate that Honda in VN does not seen fit to sell the model they call the Metro in the US.  It is 49cc but on a frame large enough for a not overly large adult, with a step through design.  I am not sure but the Honda Today in your link may be the Metro.

There is an outfit in HCMC called the Cub Factory that sells refurbished original Honda Cubs.  Original Cubs too, will work for Western height people less than 6 ft.   They will also fully refurbish your old Cub if you have one. I would love to take in my brother-in-law's Cub that he hasn't ridden in years. I expect it is a "round tuit" project for him. As we sold him our Air Blade when we left, maybe I could convince him.   They bore a lot of the engines out but you can buy a true 50cc there too.  I have never been there but I am intrigued by their photos. https://www.thehonda67andcubfactory.com/hondacub

Those Cub's look indeed fantastic :)

I test drove one a while back and did not feel uncomfortable (I'm 6'3)

About cheap knock-off bikes:

Through coffee talk I heard they run fine until they break, then turn out to be unfixable.

Not sure if it is true, but I would not risk my life (or others) on it in the first place.

Just think about the philosophy behind such companies.

Hi again,

They stop ask for papers, depending on offence or the color of your shirt or whatever they open a fines book, can be 500k, 750k or they can hold the bike if you dont have the money, depends on what you were doing. EDIT: I called a hire place they said up to 2mill for a fine, my experience was 4 years ago before I did my test.

I was stopped early on fine was 750k and I managed to talk my way out of it.

My wife had her bike held and impounded because she didnt have the money on her.

As I mentioned its not so much the fine its the no medical cover if you have an accident on your road trip, I cant imagine a care flight being cheap.

So is not something I would openly condone on the forum, driving with no insurance no licence and no medical cover is not a great idea as many have found out.
