“The warm fiddles of chilly Scandinavia.” We are dealling here with a bunch of fiddlers,, which is what we call folk violinists. Call them fiddlers, violonists or whatever, the musicians who make up Frigg represent the new generation of talent on the Finnish folk music scene. With an impressive vaiety of styles and a hybrid musical landscape they have created their own musical genre, which they call Nordgrass, a euphoric mixture of Nordic folk and American bluegrass.

True to their roots, they draw their strength first and foremost from their Finnish musical heritage, where the fiddling tradition has existed for centuries. Kaustinen, a small municipality made up of several little villages, used to be home to numerous folk musicians. One of these villages, Järvelä, even gave its name to one of the biggest families of fiddlers in the country, and three members of Frigg belong to this family. This tradition has been handed down from generation to generation.

If their name could be read as the “backslang” version of Frigg, the Griff Trio has more affinities than just that with the fiddlers from Scandinavia. “The bagpipes without the kilts”, it’s with such a motto that Griff gives new life to the bagpipes through interpretations of great rock classics such as Thunderstruck by AC/DC, but above all through 10 years of folk music from Belgium and from Europe.

Last year, moreover, they worked with the multi-instrumentalist, arranger and composer Petri Prauda, who is none other than one of the members of Frigg. Together they evoke a world full of Celtic myths and legends, they interpret Scandinavian epics and other traditional laments and offer us a journey through the crossroads and cultural heritages of their homelands.
