Why did you came to egypt ?

As I saw, a lot of people wrote here who are actually don't live in Egypt always (I don't mean egyptian guys who write here).
First time I visited Egypt (Sharm) 5 years ago. It was nice trip and I liked it also. Since that moment I had some touristic trips to here, so it was funny, but now I live here always since February:o I have egyptian husband, who I love sooo much.
What I must say: Egypt itself not bad country, especially if you travel to nice and calm place as Marina, where you can meet only high educated and high level ppl, or Sharm and Hurghada - where are a lot of tourists (they are nice and polite). Halas.
WE LIVE IN CAIRO!!! Whole year polution, crazy traffic, constractions near your building, trush in the streats everywhere, bad smell, dirty ppl.... I can continue more and more)) Where you saw polite and friendly ppl here?!!! It is maybe only 5% (They are in Marina now) from 100% who will help you really from his heart! Other's help - it is waiting for tips or you are a pretty girl. Girls, did you ever go in the streat along? I will never believe that you didn't hear: "psss-psss" or "Hallow biutiful" from friendly and polite ppl))) Did you see this poor women on the bridges with babies, who come to you in the middle of qwarrel with your bf and propose you to give them 1 pound. Or maybe you went to pyramids along??? If you need some adrenalin, I advice you to go there along!
Anyway about bad things I can speak a lot! But by chance I am here, so must try to be passion and like this beautiful country with great history.

sorry for your bad situations as i totally agree with all tyour words especially that my future wife she have the same problems here and faces alot of harassment!
really i pity girls walking alone even if they are wearing black long closed clothes or even scarfs!

Don Moe, where do you live with your Cleopatra? ))) If you are in Cairo, let her to know that I am looking for russian and ukrainian friends here.

we are in cairo
of course she will be happy as already we know alot of decent girls from mother russia and ukraine here as they work in a fitness gym's

perhaps i am an independent thinker because i grew up and reside in a city (toronto) where 49% of our citizens are foreign born. i think it's healthy to educate ourselves through travel - to walk and live amongst other faiths and cultures. i just prefer to think for myself :)

i'm not a convert although i have read an english translation of the Quran and felt a deep spiritual response to the call to prayer. (especially at the mohammed ali mosque when the muezzin performed the afternoon call to prayer...tears were in my eyes it was so magical).

so don, who knows why religion speaks to us. it's in God's hands. i'm just glad i made my own decision to visit egypt and an arab nation. i will go back.

oh boy, my adoration for egypt doesn't mean i wasn't harrassed...i was hit on by members of a local football club (must be a junior team as they were really young) training at my resort in 6th of october city...they were knocking on my hotel room door as i showered (they didn't know i was in the shower)..i yelled, they apologized...they were daring ea other who would speak to me first thus the constant knocking :) my bum was pinched in another hotel by a young staffer, then i had a cop beckon me to his home (i got peeved and left my group & returned to my hotel bar and drank a sakara beer...), tour guides asking me if i had a "single room" as if asking is all it takes to get me into bed, then i had numerous men STARING at me, asking me to take off my sunglasses etc. i was lost as to why i was getting attention...i never showed bare arms, never wore a bathing suit, always wore pants or long skirts and always had a shawl on so i asked a man why? the answer "you stand out. you're tall, blonde, green eyes and you dress respectably". hahahaha...in the end i just chalked it up to experience.

Well its true that no one know why religion speaks to us, although we are big enough to decide what's better for us!
I feel its true feelings what you are having now ,but what's strange that most muslims even stopped to have this spiritual response about the prayers and only like a tradtion must pray dohr at friday at the mosque and ramadan must pray at mosque too but once ramadan ends!! We forget about all and life is back to normal!!
Really you are luck to feel like that and I wish you peace even if you didn't convert because what's more important is to have the feelings)))
Take care
Salam

It happened and will always happen, but its true that u can even wear normal dress but only coz u r blonde or even have green eyes and I don't wanna envy you then men will always stare at you and its a reasonable situation;)

you know what , if islam in egypt nowdays was the same as 200 years ago i would never open that topic
you don't know how critical that point you touched on
the most painful thing is seeing islam disappear from egypt
islam forbid insulting others , ppl does insult others and themselves
islam forbid cheating , ppl does cheat
ppl forget about forgiveness, love and working to make things better
i don't know why some ppl intentionally leave each and every thing good
sorry the img i see for this country may be a bit dark
but you meet like 1 good person out of 10 nowdays
n i don't wanna say sometimes it's even hard to find that 1

sorry everyone for that replay
i usually love to smile and lough with others ,yet speaking of islam in egypt is way too painful
i wish one day ture islam returns

:( helal ali,
what you are experiencing in egypt is a momentous shift in many ways and it is similar to what has already occured in north america. although our society has degraded there are many who still hold firm to honour, respect and morality. i understand what you are saying and do hope other visitors to egypt have as positive an experience as i had. i was fortunate to meet good honest people. however i am not a fool. i can read character regardless of language. i also did not carry my preconceptions, or judgements from north america to egypt so was open minded and that no doubt also lead to my positive experience. lord knows, i cringe thinking what visitors must feel when they come to north america...we're not all like britney spears or the crew from jersey shores!
chin-up and have faith.

O.o

I enjoy living in Egypt because of many reasons first one I can afford it on my pension , 2nd even after the revolution it much safe then many 3rd world country that are affordable to live, as in many  south American countries  are not as safe as Egypt or as friendly to exprats .I must say you have to get thru some of the blah blah and let the Egyptian know you're not going to pay high prices or be treat differently from them and I do not expect any benefit because I am exprat  just as if they where to come to my country you only want to be treat equally  getting pass that and the fact  I love to bargain and I must say they respect you more when you know what is what . Plus there not many places on the Mediterranean Sea you can live and afford it, Europe is like wow to expensive and one of my dreams is to live near this sea  so I am very bless to be able to do it . I like that god is part of everyone's life here even if they have issued about things like Christian and Muslim as one, but  many of my friends do not but in a whole that is something that has to change to make Egypt a better place for all BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD .I like to being able to live in a part of the Mid east that is so lively and so much more open but still has many of the family values you find in the Mid east,  family is very important to them I see it  as God , Family and Now I am praying for more Egyptian to have faith in their country in time I say in time .I love the weather here too it help with my arthritis and the cost of medication here is so cheap for your basic needs health care may not be as update as the west  but the fact is if you take care of your health you do  not need a lot of specialist and if you do need to see a doctor you can afford it not like in the USA . I love the spirit of Egyptian too sure like anywhere you find good and bad people but on a whole I feel most Egyptian are very kind welcoming people who have a great scents of humor and love to laugh even in the middle of revolution they still were able to smile laugh and joke and they bonus back fast they do not hold on to hard feeling they get over things quick as they got upset hahah . I like to that that love to talk and they are even a bit loud hahah because I myself am not a quite woman and I love to have a good chat time to time , it nice to be around people who do more talking then me hahah . Of course there is History here and this magically feeling it almost hard to explain in a blog but it grip me the first time I came to Egypt. I just hope to that being from the west I can live by example and show them that we are not what they see on TV or are we like many who come here and act like they would never act at home and that many American are very conservatisms and  we have many different areas in the USA that are very religions that you cannot even buy a beer in because of their believes  it is a law IN DRY COUNTYS and that we want the same as most our daughters and son to find a good life with work and  become happily marry and to have beautiful grand babies to brings us ahaha  And that an open mind does not mean open to sexual ideas it means being open to respect the choice to do as you wish as long it respect the people around you IT IS ALL ABOUT CHOICES AND HAVING THE RIGHT TO CHOICES . So this just some my feeling about why I came to Egypt and I hope that being here I can make a different..

Dear AmericanQueen, if you like to stay near the med. sea, i can advice you to visit Turkey (Bodrum, Antalya) also. They have not less history than Egypt.
I am sure, you'll like it. Actually, there you will find more history than anywhere near med. sea. People there are more polite and will not look at you as on "the window to America".

Well let's not drag our self to compare between egyptians and turkish coz already the answer is well known ;)
Plus in every country you will see the bad and the good!!!
I went turkey about 14 times or more as my mother is half turkish half syrian!
I heard scary stories about what happens to tourists!!
Its better not to complete!!

Remember Egypt is the only country been mentioned in the Holy Quarn as the safest country in the entire world :)

So as I said never drag ur self to compare!
And if some one already faced problems in a country or even hate it like that ,it doesn't mean that all people in this country are bad!
Plus any one can leave this bad place ,so what's the reason to stick to it :D

In any country or u can say in most countries if u r having a problem in street people will ignore u or act as if its not happening
In Egypt all people will help u!

What's ur opinion now?
:)

As Salaam alakum Halal Ali, (hope i said that correctly :))

i smiled when i read your question as it is sincere and i understand the irony.

i can only speak for myself so will try to explain why my heart is in egypt although my body is in toronto, canada:

- i've travelled to egypt twice and chose this destination for the history, culture and religion

- my favourite part of egypt is her people

- the mannerisms of the majority of muslims i encountered were gracious and warm; i was touched by the rituals of behaviour and emphasis on honour; coming from north america where there are no boundaries on the surface of society (sex everywhere and lack of identity and character), it was a pleasure to experience a society that still adheres to formalities (i know egypt has her social issues too but as a foreign female, i felt safer in cairo then i do in north america)

- the call to prayer five times a day was an immediate spiritual experience and a beautiful introduction to islam in egypt; i wanted to visit an arab country and witness her people firsthand rather than just see how arabs are portrayed on cnn or bbc. i'm so glad i trusted my instinct. the media is terribly warped in north america

- the differences in upper and lower egypt are intriguing; i must admit, i prefer upper egypt :)

i became so fond of egypt and although its been two years since i was last there, i still feel a part of me is there. i will return and can't wait until i feel the warmth of the luxor sun on my face as i watch the nile and listen to the call to prayer.

your country is beautiful.

Ur post gives a great serenity to my heart ,that all media doesnt affect our reputation so much .
I'm originally from Luxor and I prefer upper Egypt of course rather than lower Egypt :D:D:top:

Excuse me if I made you sad by my comparing. But I am just the one girl who wants to say her opinion. I am sure that all other people here have oposite one!!!
What i wanted to say about sticking to the country: I am here because of my lovely husband (I think we've already discussed topic about good and bad people in every contry). So as you see, I can understand that in Egyt here are also good people.
Now is most worst news: I DIDN'T READ QOURAN! (sorry, sorry, sorry mmmm) Because of that let's disscus what we can see with our eyes in present time.
About last sentence: here in Egypt if I will face some problem in the street, for sure a lot of ppl will collect arount me in 1 min. So they will just stay and look at my problem, just need to give them popcorn to make my situation more interesting. BTW in another country to find problem in the street is MORE DIFFICULT than in Egypt.
Thank's to me for my great opinion! :D

Hehehe :D
Honestly now I agree with u as I came from sharm el sheikh 2 days ago
I saw by my eyes workers in the pool bar taking photos for girls in bikini and married egyptian dirty man making the same in the same pool
And at night two young workers taking videos for girls wearing hot shorts or even normal night out fits!!!
I was shocked how it happens in a place people come to have rest !!!!!

So forgive me if I was angry before
I had to admit after I saw by my eyes :(

Asalam aleikum everyone
And for those who are fasting, i hope this ramadan brings you closer to God and your fellow Egyptians.
I follow everyone's posts and after reading the experiences with anger and crime, i wanted to share my thoughts and pls enlighten me when i don't have the full interpretation:)
- i am not political nor do i pretend to have a full grasp of any platform so please excuse me if i offend anyone!
- but do you realize the world watched your revolution with awe and pride? The brotherhood of man (sorry to sound poetic) was felt. Your country changed the view of arabs: there was unity, solidarity, dignity and the demand for basic rights and self determination
- we witnessed and cheered - what you did, we westerners wouldnt have the courage to do. I along with my torontonians cried - we were so proud
- the north american media again was skewed so i followed the guardian and al jazeera's live feeds instead
- afterwards i communicated with friends in cairo and heard their stories and fears for your country. They tell me as recent as yesterday of the anger of people, and the feeling of the unknown
- coincidently, the UN produced a report on the youth of egypt in 2009 - foreshadowing the climax: rampant unemployment, lack of opportunity, dismal social economic outlook. So this in my mind directly contributes to the current psychological mindset. Freedom intoxicates initially until you see what responsibility it carries especially to how you treat others. North america is dealing with this issue constantly: the sense of entitlement, unrestrained desires and lack of dicipline.
Egypt still holds the opportunity for grace. I am sad to hear of the uncertainty, violence, harassment etc but it is egyptians who will shape the parameters for acceptable behaviour. Yes the pendulum has swung, it had to given the cicumstances but again self determination is your right. I never hesitate to express my love for egypt and will always defend her good people to westerners. The bad folks will face judgment and will hopefully gain self worth and act respectfully toward themselves and others.

Pls excuse my poor spelling :)

As an egyptian am proud to hear all what you said it shows us how others look to young egyptians
About the bad folks I wish they were with us in the first days of revolution as am sure if they had our spirit then they will never do what they are making!
Today it was hard to fast but at least we had a spiritual feelings although its not like every year but hope egyptian citizens will cheer up again as every one I guess nowadyas is only afraid about what future would bring!
Hope all the world have your way and respect for us :)

i guess people coming from many places around the world and love it here and feel liek wanna stay does and egyptians wanna run away from egypt? it does have a reason

forigeners in egypt, they can definate enjoy egypt coz financialy egypt can be magical with the currency difference of any foriegn curreny, the same cant be applicable to egyptians

egypt is the right place only if u have good money for a good standard, if not, then it will be a deinfate unbearable place.

besides an expat is here getting extra paid for bieng away from his country and this is another brevelage.

Also egyptians are well known in bieng so polite to forigners and not to other egyptians.

this is how the issue as a fact.

Its true

i smiled when i read your question as it is sincere and i understand the irony.

i can only speak for myself so will try to explain why my heart is in egypt although my body is in toronto, canada:

- the differences in upper and lower egypt are intriguing; i must admit, i prefer upper egypt :)

i became so fond of egypt and although its been two years since i was last there, i still feel a part of me is there. i will return and can't wait until i feel the warmth of the luxor sun on my face as i watch the nile and listen to the call to prayer.

your country is beautiful.

shukran moe.
i write from the heart
and life is curious sometimes isn't it?
i don't know why i feel such a spiritual connection to egypt
its not just because i fell in love with a beautiful egyptian man either :) i felt instantly connected to her people before i met him.
i also had an experience one night on my first trip
i did the usual 16 day tour of top sites: cairo, alex, abu simbel, aswan, edfu, kom ombo then luxor...
well one night on the nile cruise, i went to the top deck alone at 1:00 am as we sailed from aswan towards luxor. i was so pleased to have the deck to myself as no one was up there. i grabbed a couple clean beach towels and sat on the deck watching the stars, listening to the night and staring at this stunning huge full moon...i was transfixed. i sat up there for over an hour and felt a spiritual event happening...i felt that God was asking if i was ready for what he had in store for my life. i felt i was and promised to have courage even tho i didn't know what the future would be.
back home i was facing a job loss (investment banking collapsed in 2008 which is the industry i had worked in for 13 yrs) and i was also at a cross roads in my life.
so i think in that moment i knew egypt was in my future. i also met my husband the next morning.
i was glad i had courage and trusted.
my egyptian canadian friends make fun of me because i follow the news, attended the toronto demonstration in january, and have seen more of their country than they have :D
i would also be more than happy to share why i love my hometown toronto with anyone thinking of visiting. we have a special city.

Don moe, yeah, the thing is, Katyusha is so neutral, and she is not biased by any media, she used to analyse everything, then she mentioned our flaws and our real good attributes, she judged us in a right way
The thing that i like on her too, is that, her posts have been written with high feelings, so we felt it coz she delivered her amazing and honest feelings to our hearts, she speaks about her high feelings towards religion and she respects Islam although she is not Muslim, and she used to think and analyze  everything, then she talks in a very polite, logical, smart and respectable way.For me, I respect those kind of people and appreciate them so much
What I believe is that when u write something from the heart, it will affect the others

Mero 928, as u said she is not only fell in love with Egypt during her stay here but she is in Egyptians' heart too:)

It was really really nice talking with all of u guys and to learn from your different point of views, and for Katyusha, try to come to Egypt as soon as possible, we are expecting from you to book your ticket soon and to have coffee and drink with eacothers

Love ya all
