Arriving Weds 22nd June 2011

Hello all

I better introduce myself.

Me a UK happily :gloria married man of 16 years, young semi fit 43, always employed but on and off last 3 years, off at the moment.

Wife and I contemplated for 3 years if we should switch to Gibraltar. A few years ago I was offered a job at the online company called Mansions in Gibs. I totally regret not accepting the offer as I had just started in a new job elsewhere.

I find being overly broad skilled makes it very hard to find something that I can do or enjoy doing in the UK. Seems easy enough in some countries but I want to be in an English speaking environment due to my hearing disability.

I am a Web Manager (CMS,Content, SEO, Brand Guidelines, Designer...), IT Techie (MCSE and others) and a keen photographer. Web Master at Siemens in Switzerland, EMEA Web Manager at Honeywell UK, MIS and 3rd Line Support for UK Police national training centre, Web Team Leader for Spargonet UK/USA, Specialist Web & Document Management at Fujifilm UK/Worldwide, Digital Librarian for Mirror Group London.... fairly diverse roles and all 'webby' technology related include using Apples, PCs, Servers, Networks, CMS, DMS...

I will be arriving Wednesday 22nd June and hopefully stay at the Gibraltar youth hostel while I look for a cosy flat to rent. Maybe I find something before, made contact with a very nice and helpful chap over at the aj-andalucia property agent.

My wife will stay in the UK while I 'build up' in Gib. As she is the main bread winner being with same employer of 9 years she will only join me once I have found a secure permanent job and settled down.

I hope to succeed at least in two of three things:

1. Find permanent employment as Web Managager or similar and friends :D
2. Go self employed offering a photography service e.g. Estate Agents :)
3. Return to UK with tail between my legs :o

Look forward to coming over!

Regards
Gavin

Hi Gavin!

Welcome to Expat.com :)

Armand

Thanks Armand

and a big hello to you

Good luck! I am not there yet but hope to be by the end of summer. Have you been to Gibraltar before?

Thank you,

yes I have been there a couple of times in the past due to job interviews and stayed 3 days and 5 days. 2 and 3 years ago.

For this trip I decided to change my plans a little. I won't be taking a flat straight away, as I bought a return ticket for a week later.

I shall see a couple of job agents, a few property agents, a couple of private landlords and then only on monday next week I will decide if I should take the plunge and rent a flat for 6 or 12 months.

If I do I will return July in my car and depending on where I am renting maybe a small box trailer.

Good luck on your move over too

I will keep my fingers crossed for you! The weather has got to be better than over here anyway! The rent is the only downside as far as I can see. The cheapest I can find is around £800. Ah well, as my friend over there says "skint in the sun":)

Thanks. The rent does seem high right in Gibraltar but you can locate nice looking 1 or 2 bedroom flats near the border for around 500 euros per month. Just keep googling. I will be looking this week and will know for sure! Fingers crossed to myself!

The problem, I believe, with living in Spain and working in Gibraltar is that you are paying into the Gibraltar taxes and should you become unemployed you are not eligible for unemployment benefit from either Spain or Gibraltar! Obviously you hope not to lose your job but nobody has a crystal ball. Having said all that, my friend has been over there with 2 children and has been supporting them all for around 10 years now with no problems and no gaps in employment. I keep looking at properties and can't wait to get over there for some sunshine. Very jealous that your trip is imminent. Have fun!

Hi Gavin

Hope you are well.  I tried to post this as an attachment, but couldn't figure out how to

Hi Coco,

Many thanks for the links.

It seems I did not get on too well with the recruitment agents.

Perhaps it was because I was too high up within the management or directorship skills level. If you know what I mean.

Most of the agents were only interested in younger people for lower positions and these were offering very low salaries of £12,000 to if lucky a max of £25,000.

With Gibraltar being sooooo expensive it is a wonder they are able to find skilled people!

In the few days I was there I met 3 such employees, all happen to be leaving their employers in Gibs within the next month or so. They are returning to the UK to seek higher salaries.

Anyway I am now working in the UK as Group Online Sales Director with over 16,000 products on 10+ ecommerce sites. My roles is to develope a group catalgue, one major online store, SEOs etc etc...

Quite challenging and lots of fun :->

And my salary and perks is at least 3 time better than the best I could find in Gibs!

Cheers
Gavin

Hi

Congratulations on your new job.

I have emailed all those agencies and got only a few replies. One agency said "£25,000" would be "ambitious".  I was enquiring about PA work and have been working for 20+ years in Investment Banking.  I couldn't possibly take a massive cut.

Looks like I'll have to re-think!
