Custom - duty free exemption limit?

Hi,

I am from the Netherlands but am a resident of Panama.

I went to the USA for a couple of days for a business trip. Flew back to Panama today evening.

I carried an ice cream machine worth $685. My understanding was that I could bring in goods for $2,000. But the custom officer at the airport told me that the limit is only $500. Is that true?

Cheers, Dhaval

My understanding is that you can bring in goods worth $500 in to Panama without a custom fee... unless the intent is to resell the items.

If you mail things in, customs will usually charge a fee if the value is over $100.

An update: spoke to a customs agent and indeed, the duty free limit when flying into Tocumen is $500.
