Working conditions and labour laws in Australia

Hello,

Working conditions differ across the world, and as a working expat, it is important to know your rights as an employee.

Are working conditions standard in Australia? For instance, are working hours, paid time off, and sick leave different for expats v.s. locals? Do they differ based on the type of company (private, public, NGO)?

Are there laws in place regarding physical conditions of the office, employee protection, etc.?

What are some resources in Australia to inform people about labour laws and employee rights (websites, governmental associations)?

Have the general working conditions or labour laws changed in any way lately?

How do the working conditions and labour laws in Australia differ from your country of origin?

Thank you for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

Hi Priscilla

A very broad set of questions: Australian labour laws are published and follows strictly.
Refer.. fair work act 2012 in australia- Good luck reading this this!
But in summary working hrs are 9-5 7 hours a day 40 hrs a week. if you work out side those hrs then there is usually extra compensation for that- called penalty rate. compensation is in time or dollars. leave days are about 20 days a year and sick leave are more than that but you only take them if sick and you d not get paid for sick leave remaining days if leaving an organisation.
Labour laws are fairly uniform across various sectors and govern everything about the workers including fair treatment.
However, laws seems very similar across a number of countries but differences maybe in implementing
those laws. Companies in Australia tends to want to be in good books-and tend to follow the labour laws well
Unless there is a specific issue but I can tell you all will be covered bt the above doc.
