The dowry is not a fixed amount. What happens (briefly) is that when you have stated your intention to marry and been introduced to the family, the community elders meet to discuss the dowry, then produce a list of requirements. Quite often it isnt in the form of a cash payment, but items which should be bought. It isnt a case of you making an offer and the list is not negotiable.

I think £1000 is on the low side - double or triple it, I would have thought. It is not unusual for families to get a bit greedy when they know there is a foreigner in the picture!
