MY question is it worth it to fly just one way there and see if it works out? I have a friend there that i have spoken with for over a year a and half. She would put me up.

Just FYI - you cannot visit PI with one way ticket - you will need a round trip ticket. you will not be able to exist the PI airport without round trip ticket. Sorry, check rules and regulation for visit to PI, I maybe worry.

Actually you will need a ticket out of the Philippines. It does not need to be a round trip ticket. Just find the cheapest ticket to another country, I.e., Hong Kong, Malaysia, etc. It is called a throw away ticket which you won't use.
I would say yes to your question, give it a shot. Have you been there at all yet? You absolutely should visit first, and I think 2 weeks is too short a visit oin your own. Having a local show you around and how they do things there is very helpful
