What helps is best is immersion. Take the YMCA course, plus the Duolingo app, plus friends to force you to only speak in Malay. The more you are forced to use it, the faster you will learn.

That said, I find it a grueling challenge. I have no courses I can attend and my friends all want to improve English, not help me with Malay. I do the best I can by myself. And with so much English being spoken in the country, there isnt much incentive to learn except to deal with government documents. My biggest problem is that when I mis-pronounce AT ALL, nobody understands anything im talking about and then I revert to English. Still, it really makes you feel at home to be able to speak it and locals appreciate the effort.
