CELTA courses and English language teaching jobs for an American

Hello :-)

I am an American living in Bellingham, WA. I have taken a couple TESOL courses at Western Washington University and am now looking for an online or in person program to attain a CELTA. The only one in Austria I've found is in Vienna. I also have a BS in Chemical Engineering and worked as a Registered Nurse in Critical Care for 20 years.

My primary goal is to teach English to adults, or possibly to children, in Germany, Austria or Switzerland. I learned to speak German in Salzburg when I went to school there years ago. My secondary goal would be to teach English anywhere else in the world.

Finally, I would like to know what I need to do as an American to be able to teach EFL in Austria and what the job market is like.

Thanks very much,
Dan

This will be a bit dissapointing in terms of information since I am not an English teacher. However, that said- I am attatching 2 links that might be helpful:

English is very important here especially at the Gymnasium level. There is also enough tutoring (Nachhilfe) to go around if private tutoring would bridge the gap while you take the nessecary exams.
There are often positions for english native speakers available in the public school system. Depending on funding/etc... You would work with each class at one school or be shared between a few schools.
Hope this helps a bit.

Thanks, Sarah :-)

Hi Dan!
True, the only Celta course in Austria is available at BFI college in Schlachthausgasse Vienna, round the corner from the underground. You should be fluent in German if you wish to teach German speakers English, and jobs are only freely available in the major towns or cities, or at language schools. There are international schools as well in Bavaria south of Munich, and St Gilgen just outside Salzburg in the Salzkammergut lake district. Vienna too has international schools with the UN being also based there, as well as many foreign embassies. Good luck! Courses are regularly run, and can be viewed/booked online via BFI. Rod Moore

English is taught as a second language in all schools. Let's get that straight.

Second, if you choose to teach adults in a school(s) or private you need to have an extensive teaching career behind you, as the at present it's saturated.

Here is an example of a few english job listings, you can have a look at the qualifications required.
