Pediatricians

Hello,

My name is Monica and I am from Costa Rica. I'm not moving to the Netherlands, but my brother and his family are; so Im looking for info for them. Right now one of their main concerns is their 10 month old daughter and finding a pediatrician for her. We are not sure how they can find one once they move there, so if anyone could enlighten me on this subject, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

The public Healthcare system in Holland is different to the USA; is there something wrong with your brother's daughter that she needs a paediatrician straight away?  General healthcare issues are normally dealt with by the local GP, with referral to a specialist paediatrician if required; if your brother tries to short-cut this system, he'll be turned away by the Hospital.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your reply!

No, they dont need a doctor straight away, it's just for general periodic check ups and stuff like that. So it is very helpful to know that they first have to go to a GP. What about vaccinations? I guess in that case the GP would refer them to a specialist?
Something else, how would they choose their GP? I heard it depends on the area that they live, right? like, they have to register with the one that is closest to the place where they live, is that correct?

Thanks once again  for your info!

On arrival, register with your local Town Hall, you'll get your BSN number, then you can register with your local doctor.

In general, everything is done via your GP; in the event of an emergency, dial 911 for an ambulance.  If unwell, out of GP surgery hours, but not an emergency and can't wait till surgery is next open, then call the out of hours service, you'll get the details when you register with your GP.

Medical Insurance is compulsory in Holland, but I hope your brother already has that arranged via his employer.
