Average Salary in Digital Marketing for an expat

Hi,

I'm moving to HCM to work in a Digital Marketing agency as a Digital Account Manager. The company is not a multinational but it's run by expats and has international clients. My role consists of looking after the international clients and manage their digital marketing campaigns. I have 4 years experience in Advertising and Marketing agency side, of which 2 years was in Digital Marketing.

Given the conditions stated above, I would like to know what monthly salary I should expect. Any help would be much appreciated as I'm bit lost

Thank you! :)

Hi & welcome to the forum

You've accepted a position here....did you apply for it, or was it offered to you?

I can't believe a starting salary was not part of the discussion given that your possibly leaving one job, moving to another country with all the relocation issues to deal with......and the “ money” was not discussed.

Before you leave everything behind,,I'd be getting something in writing regarding your “living wage”.

I have no idea what the salary could be, but I know local companies that pay local university grads only a few hundred dollars a month for accountants positions.  A VN friend is a building engineer overseeing 200 staff...he gets a few hundred bucks a month as well.

Unless what you do is a specific skill set that the company can't get a local to do....you may get a shock at what they offer.

Good luck.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I have been offered a salary, but not sure if it's too little, normal or really good. Seriously, I have no idea about wages in Vietnam so I don't know if I should accept it or ask for something else...

It's not a super specific skill (Digital Marketing) but they struggle to find local employees with my experience, training and English. They also know the company where I currently work, and the quality of our training is very appealing to them.

Would that help to make an estimation?
Thanks

Hello

I think There is not stander salary for Marketing in Vietnam, But you can tell on here how much they willing to offer as we cannot suggest you anything, If they offered you higher then 2000$  that's will be good enough to leave it here.

It's $1,200 a month (after tax apparently).
But many hours a week (48h minimum) and very big global companies with a lot of responsibility.

You can live in reasonable comfort at that salary but you could actually make more teaching English with fewer hours.  Also beware of salaries that are quoted as after tax.  In many cases that simply means that the employer does not intend to go through the trouble of withholding and paying the taxes.  Without proof of payment of taxes it will be difficult to move money out of the country.  Ask again about the before tax salary to be sure they are not just tying you up in a tax cheat scenario.

Part of the problem may be that while the job may be one that can be held by a foreigner, it does not have to be.  There are many Vietnamese today with the English skills as well at the IT skills to hold that job.  Remember this is the land that brought you Flappy Bird.  That said, depending on the tax scenario, the salary may be about right.  Download this pdf:  https://anhtuanle234.files.wordpress.co … e-2017.pdf and look at page 38.  It describes a Digital Marketing Director with 5-7 years as making 40-65 million ($1760-2861)  Based on the description and your own self description, this person would be your boss.

Is this Salary depends on the size of company or stander in Vietnam?

Thank you for your answer. Very helpful

That's a very poorly paid job. If I worked that many hours a week I would be earning 4000 usd a month.

Are you an English teacher?

Yes except it would be nearly impossible to work 48 hours as a teacher.   I don't know your case but most teachers are only paid for actual "face time."  I have been told by local VN teachers that they consider 25 classroom hours a week as full time even though they may be obligated to remain at the school all day.  As an experienced teacher your need for prep time may be minimal but at 48 hours, prep time would be close to none.  I did know one person who did 32 hours a week but I am positive that the quality of his work suffered as a result.  There may be exceptions, but I would guess that at $20/hour most teachers max out around $2000/month.

The point was, the hourly rate is very, very low.

IMO, that's a good salary for the Digital Marketing Specialist role in Vietnam at the moment.
in fact it's in the higher band. Max is prolly $1500.
Most similar job ads on popular VN sites keep it "negotiable" while others offer $500-$800 plus commission based on no. of successful leads generated and other KPIs.

Yogi doesn't work here, but I've heard the expat tax rate is 20% flat plus 8%  levy for social insurance or something similar.  (Maybe someone can clarify that).

You'd also want to read the Double Tax treaty between Spain & Vietnam so you know where you stand.     You could be putting a lot of time  & effort into  working for peanuts.

Would you work for the expatriate salary figure quoted in your home country or in the UK?

If not then why would you come to Vietnam and work for the same amount?

Unless there are numerous other benefits included such as all housing costs, taxation, full health insurance coverage, transport, flights home, leave payment, and other living costs then it's certainly not an expatriate salary.

It could be classified as a "Regional Expatriate" salary.

Don't most teachers in the UK make more than £15/per hour ($20 US).  My info says minimal national salary is £22917 for 195 days or for 7 hours, £16/hour.  Based on face time only of 5 hours/day, as ESL teachers are paid in VN, the number increases to £23.50 ($30 US.)  Perhaps you need to ask your question to every ESL teacher in the country.  Obviously cost of living enters into the equation.
