Moving/working in Kunming, preparations

Hello :) I am currently gathering information about Kunming and teaching. This is going to be a long post, if you have the patience, I thank you in advance.

I am learning Mandarin and taking college courses in general education/teaching.

I want to move to Kunming. In the anticipation of the language acquisition and cultural experience as much as for the adventure and career change.

I have my bachelors degree in History. And I am a certified Paralegal in California. I have over three years working experience in legal work and business. And I'm in a 9 month English tutoring commitment. I do not have my TEFL certification yet but plan to get one.

Is there anyone on here who has current contacts in Kunming whom might be willing to talk with me about transitioning recommendations, thoughts on teaching English in Kunming, and general items of concerns? I want to know what everyone's story is, what they experienced, and primarily, how people got started. In general, I'm hoping to make some new friends to meet up with in the next year.

I want to move in the next year and if anyone has any advice or comments, I would really appreciate the insight.

Thank you!

Hi there!
there's no standard cook book on relocation to Chinese 2nd/3rd tier cities. If I were you I'd book a centrally located hotel or bnb a place for a week or two on tourist visa to get a first hand feeling/experience. Everyone has different standard.
BTW teaching, I see more and more people moving here to teach English, there's a huge need and very few schools are paying top dollar for qualified teachers, the rest are mainly using the workforce " white face" to make money... many schools pop up and shutdown after a year or two.
good luck!

A good source for jobs, advice and information can be found here; http://www.eslcafe.com/

and the forum here (very useful)   http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewforum … 9ee66b9c6c

Thank you for the advice! I plan to go in advance to take a look around and see what I find. :)

These links are really helpful too. I'm familiar with Dave's ESL cafe but wasn't sure if the job postings were something I could look at seriously since this is completely new to me. I'm used to applying to jobs which are recommended by others who know the people or company that is hiring. I appreciate all the help and guidance! :)
