Tefl a long term career or just a gap year?

Hi I am considering doing a TEFL course to teach in Thailand. I am 33 and spent 7 years as cabin crew for Emirates so have spent a lot of time in Thailand and travelling in general.
My sister did a TEFL and lives in Japan but she doesn't intend to teach forever.
My concern is that TEFL courses/jobs just seem to be for younger people wanting to work and travel when they are younger.
Is it something that can be a long term career? I have had a couple of career/location changes and wouldn't like to put myself into something that would only last a year.
Any honest advice would be appreciated
