Keeping in touch while living in Laos

Hello everyone,

What are the best ways you've found for keeping in touch with friends and family back home while living in Laos? How frequently do you stay in touch with loved ones?

Are there local equivalents to common instant messaging and online video calling services that you prefer or are more widely used?

If there is a sizeable time difference, how do you manage this?

Do you make international phone calls from a landline or mobile phone from Laos? What do you think of the cost?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

For me it depends on which country I am working in and whether there is a good internet service. In Afghanistan it was done using a satellite phone due to poor internet.

Other countries with reasonable internet it was done online using Skype. Where we had a strong internet I used Face Book video chat which was an excellent medium to use as it was the next best thing to being with family in Laos.

Laos has a reasonable phone service and my wife can phone me from there using either landline or mobile, most times it is mobile with which she can also access FB.

Cost does not enter into the equation when it comes to family.
