Registering a birth in Vanuatu

Hello everyone,

Have you had to or are you going to register a birth in Vanuatu? What was the experience like?

Who is required to register the birth, and where? Can it be either the mother or father?

What documents are usually required in Vanuatu?

How long does the process to register a birth take? Are there any time limits in which the registration must be completed?

Did you register the birth with your home country and how did that process compare? Will your child be able to have dual nationality?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

Hello everyone,
Ours is different as we adopted our son from within Vanuatu in 2007.
Have you had to or are you going to register a birth in Vanuatu?
We adopted a local boy at his birth. Birth was registered within a few days.
What was the experience like?

Who is required to register the birth, and where? Vila hospital did the birth certificate and then we went to Titles office to have fully registered. The birth mothers name was on the original birth certificate. After 3 months, you can apply to the Supreme Court to have the adoption registered. Cost was 20,000vt ($240). No lawyers were required. A very simple process.
After adoption, the birth certificate was changed to have only our names recorded.
We applied for an Australian adoption visa which is for 5 years, so our son could enter Australia easily with us. After about 5 years, we applied for Australian citizenship for our son and this was granted. He received an Australian Passport. He now had 2 passports.

After being in Vanuatu for 10 years, we applied for Dual Citizenship for myself and my wife. Our son was also included and now also has dual citizenship. We now all have a ni-vanuatu and Australian passports. Cost was about totaling 700,000vt for whole family. No lawyers were required.

We are happy to discuss and support anyone wanting to adopt from within Vanuatu.
The process is not complicated
