Registering a birth in Ghana

Hello everyone,

Have you had to or are you going to register a birth in Ghana? What was the experience like?

Who is required to register the birth, and where? Can it be either the mother or father?

What documents are usually required in Ghana?

How long does the process to register a birth take? Are there any time limits in which the registration must be completed?

Did you register the birth with your home country and how did that process compare? Will your child be able to have dual nationality?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

I had 2 daughters born in Ghana. Both had their births registered in Accra. The first one was registered at the local municipality which will get the certificate from the " Births and Deaths registry" in Accra Central
The 2nd daughter was born at Ridge hospital in Accra and there she was issued a birth cert.
This however came in a different format and I acquired another one for her at the Registry in Accra.
This can be done by the father or the mother.
Both have dual citizenship  ,  it depends on the other nationality which they might get .Dual citizens are issued ( not for free ) with a certificate and ID card by the Ministry of the Interior. This states details of Ghanaian and other countries' passports. When traveling this card can be asked for by immigration officials when entering or leaving Ghana.
