Does anyone have first-hand experience with what U.S. smartphones function correctly in Costa Rica (as of 2011)? I want to buy a smartphone in the U.S., unlock it, then insert a local, pre-paid sim card. Mostly I want it for the data plan. I want to make international calls via skype to avoid racking up a fortune.
From the research I've done, I believe this is pretty much the only way I can have a cell phone in Costa Rica without being a citizen, a legal resident, opening up a business down there, or asking a citizen to add a line for me in their name. (If I'm wrong, please let me know. The information I have come across has been VERY confusing.).
I have tried to check ICE's list of compatible phones, but their website is very confusing as well. They list compatible phones but then have a notation saying something like "these phones may or may not function with ICE". Wth?
If you can help me, I'd really appreciate it!!
