Is Armenia, Colombia dangerous?

Guidofeb12

Armenia is a great place and so is Manizales.

More of "small city feelings" to them.

Danger in Armenia?

The Expat-friendly areas such as the medical district,

the university districts, the commercial areas along

the main drag and (in my experience) Parque de la Vida

are all safe as can be expected.  That´s despite any

signs in El Parque to beware of wayward caninos.

There are low rent neighborhoods that cannot be

classified as safe.  Gringos would not ordinarily

find themselves in these barrios  unless they were

deliberately looking for a low-rent apartment or

were cruising around looking for a bar.

The youtube site Gran Colombia, produced by

USA Expat Loren Lowe, rhymes with cow, has

plentiful content from its host city of Armenia.

Loren hosts a weekly show called Coffee Time ..

whose past episodes are archived and viewable

on demand (free of charge).  The show has been

transmitted live at 11 a.m. Armenia time about

48 Sundays per year .. and promptly archived.

A young Asian influencer from Los Angeles named Wes, based out of Manizales, who previously lived in Medellin before he found God and realized that Medellin was sin city, exponentially, made a road trip to Armenia with an Asian friend probably visiting from Los Angeles. He gave Armenia an 8 on a scale. They didn't see any any gringos except one who they thought was a sugar-daddy. They also said they thought the people had a little darker skin in Armenia than Manizales.

Qi commented on Wes's review and didn't like it. My impression is that Qi thinks he is the only expat who should be opining on the cities of Colombia.

Which brings us to the fact that there

are about 15 cities and municipalities

in Quindio.  (kin-DEE-oh)

My favorite Coffee Zone city is Armenia.

Loren Lowe and others rave about

Manizales, even though it´s cooler

temperature-wise than the other

Coffee capitals, at 7000 feet, and

gets a ton of rain.  Also, it´s

infamously hilly in some areas.

For warmer temps and outdoor

swimming, the slightly

lower-elevation micro-climates

on the road to the Armenia airport

may be ideal as the communities

there appear to be tranquilo.

A supersafe area if visiting Armenia.

I liked the modern Mocawa hotel near

Parque de la Vida.  They heated the

pool only on weekend days and

some holiday periods.  I tipped the

pool boy to turn down the music.

There´s a sweet jacuzzi next to the

pool.

Across the main drag from Mocawa

is the Armenia Hotel.  Book a room

on the Parque de la Vida side of the

Armenia, not the avenue side, as

the latter side is too noisy due to

street noise and single-pane windows.

The pool gets too much shade --

a design flaw -- and thus is chillier

than the Mocawa pools.

Parque de la Vida is a wonderful place to

exercise or take a walk.  The many

points of interest include live animals,

especially ducks or geese .. a walkway

through a dense jungle-like expanse ..

and varous water features.  Entrance

fee was fifty centavos when i visited.

I remember Qi saying in a video, that in Armenia people assume he is Colombian until they hear him speak. He contrasted that with Cuenca where the people are more mestizo and he was immediately identified as a gringo. He prefers not "sticking out" so to speak. I guess Wes and his buddy stuck out in Armenia, since they said on the video that people were staring at them.

@Quechimba Hello, Colombia is a great place and like any place you need to keep your eyes open, and your cell phone, camera and wallet safe. The weather is excellent, not too hot. It is in the coffee triangle, or what was the coffee triangle, due to changes in the weather many of the coffee growers have moved. If this is the area that you are interested in there are several other choices depending on where you want to go. Manizales, Pereida, Ibague is also an option it is closer to Bogota, and it is slightly larger than the others with more stores, however, it depends on what you are looking for. You can check rents at properati / or Yumblin. Welcome, keep your eyes open and you will not have any problems.

Rey...you are adressing a guy that probably was in Colombia long before you even heard of it..

So you are inferring that you and the OP with a different account are the same person, and that CaliRay doesn't have anything to say about Colombia that you don't already know?
