What to expect when moving to Pakistan

Hello everyone,

Is there anything you wish you had known before moving to Pakistan? For example, transportation, internet speeds, types of housing, aspects of the culture or social life.

In your opinion, what's the most important thing to know about Pakistan?

When would you recommend someone should begin planning their move to Pakistan?

What were the most helpful ways you found to get organised? For example, did you use a checklist, were there any particularly useful websites or apps?

What advice would you give to future expats preparing to move to Pakistan?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

It depends on where you are moving from, It would be best to spend a couple of weeks in the actual city you'd be moving to and come up with a check list. Everything in Pakistan is different than the west. Transportation,  roads, banking, internet speeds (even the type of fuel you put in the cars is often different). Be ready for a major change.

Now add kids in the mix and it would be a different ball game altogether. Entertainment outlets are also very different. In Pakistan people mostly entertain on food. There are other things poping up such as scuba diving, snorkeling off roading hiking etc but this is not everywhere.

The security situation of the country anywhere close to what is usually sent on the airwaves. It is not a war zone. People do have normal lives. Medical facilities are average but it could get expensive without insurance.

The most important factor is your income. If your income is steady you should enjoy Pakistan. This can be debated but an average north american living standard where you make say 70 to 100 a year before tax can be maintained for approx. 2.4 million PKR a year or 200k a month. Again this is debatable but this number in Q4 of 2017 should not off by too much. This should allow you to maintain a decent vehicle rent an apartment in an ok location pay for food and clothing and some eating out / movies.
