What to expect when moving to Germany

Hello everyone,

Is there anything you wish you had known before moving to Germany? For example, transportation, internet speeds, types of housing, aspects of the culture or social life.

In your opinion, what's the most important thing to know about Germany?

When would you recommend someone should begin planning their move to Germany?

What were the most helpful ways you found to get organised? For example, did you use a checklist, were there any particularly useful websites or apps?

What advice would you give to future expats preparing to move to Germany?

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Priscilla

That stores closed for the rest of the day at about 14:00 on Wednesday and pretty much nothing is open on Sunday.

Stores are closed on Sundays some small shops might close early on Saturdays but the only place where they might close that early on other days might be in a small village. That is definitely not normal in cities!

I have never seen shops close on 14:00 on Wednesdays. You probably meant Saturday?
Shop opening hourse improved tremedously in the last few decades: When I was young, they had to close at 18:00 every weekday and 13:00 on Saturday - BY LAW!
Now you can ship until 22:00 Mon.-Sat. in most places.
Sunday, however, is reserved for family and free time - by a broad political consensus that is very unlikely to change.

No, Wednesdays in Sonnenberg and Moehringen. As well as Saturdays.

Not in the city. But it could be a shock if you're living in a suburb and they do close.

Well that is exceptional. Sonnneberg (an outlying area of Stuttgart) only has some small shops to begin with but most stores in Möhringen do NOT close early on Wed. The huge Kaufland in Möhringen has food and virtually anything a person would need and is open until 10 pm 6 day a week, so it's not like one cannot shop after 2 pm. And the laws have loosened up over the years; Rewe City supermarkets are open until midnight 6 days a week. What aren't normal are 24 hour/day stores like in America but then they don't exist in many countries. And even then, there are many gas stations in Germany that have mini-markets that are open 24 hours.
