Can any one advice on the common mode of public transport used in Abu Dhabi and the cheaper one and is it safe?

Bus is one of the safest, most secured and always reliable.
The things you need to maximize your bus experience:
1/ Bus card (either monthly - costing DHS 80 per month - or per trip - costing DHS 2 per ride);
2/ 'Darb' application on your mobile which will tell you the arrival of buses at a certain bus stop;
3/ Map to familiarize yourself with the bus number and their routes.

Taxi fares have recently gone up but taxis too are reliable and safe.
