Pets in Budapest?

If anyone wants to come to a veterinary clinic where the doc speaks English (studied in the States), is totally a friendly and fun place, and is advertised as the first American style clinic in Hungary, let me know, or visit this website: hungarovetrendelo.hu

American and Canadian background, and it totally feels like home!
English speaking dogs-cats welcome! :)

Looks like a fab practice!  :) All modern with beautiful new equiptment and good services :) I am most envious!!!!!!!

I am a student vet myself and most (but not all) Hungarian vets speak enough English to get by. My own advice is that for annual vaccinations pick your nearest surgery - you need no Hungarian to show the vaccination card to them!!!!  It will be the cheapest option and most convenient. If their English is good and the practice clean and well run then stay with them, if not then look for something else.

BUT my only reservation with this particular practice is that they are closed on Sunday.  If you pet needs daily fluid therapy for example then you are going to have to use 2 different practices :(  I would also have the number and address of the veterinary university in Budapest at hand as if your animal is hit by a car or very ill out of hours, then in the UK most vets will (or used to) come out (forn a very large fee :P   ).  I don't know what it is like here, but the university is open 24/7, 365 days a year and as they are training English speakers how to be vets, then their English is good :)

Also if you have an exotic pet make sure the vet has experience in that area - many don't have a clue!

Well, I find that this practice is different from all of the ones I have been to in Budapest. Animals arrive for pre-scheduled appointments, so there is no waiting time, and the best thing about the clinic, is that it doesn't feel like a clinic at all.
If a pet needs extra care on Sundays, they are also available, you don't need to use 2 different practices, but in general, all appointments are booked for Monday to Saturday.
From my experience, most people like to chat about their pets and make friends at the vet. I personally don't like to go to a place where my ferret gets a shot and we are kicked out without having the opportunity to get to know them better.
I like this clinic very much, since it brings me closer to home, and all dogs are extremely happy when they come to visit, they do not need to be dragged in, they feel at home here as well. :)

There is animal ambulance allatmento.hu/elerhetoseg.php which you can call 24hr. Not sure about their english, however, in the emergency it is enough to be able to say your address.

Here is also 24hr veterinary practise drjuhasztamas-allatkorhaz.wlap.hu/. It is ok with reasonable costs.

Here is also one which pretty extensive hours budaikisallatklinika.hu/

Most vets we have met have spoken english from totally fluent to marginal, mostly good enough. My experience is that the professional service is very high standard indeed.

In those cases we have needed specialist service we have used university clinique which gives all honesty outstanding medical care and all doctors are fluent in english.

I have also heard about this american style vet, i am sure it is good as well, for us it has not been necessary as not being americans, we are looking for european experience :-)

Yes, but the vet here is Hungarian as well who thought it would be a great idea to introduce a different atmosphere for animal clinics here in Europe as well, so apart from high standard of care, he is as Hungarian as it gets! :)

I think it is still a brand new style of animal healthcare services, and I think it is something worth seeing. The language is a plus, the atmosphere, the friends and people give it a special touch! :)

Maybe it is great as you say, but honestly, if people are happy with the current vet they are seeing, why would they change only for having an "american style" clinic?
We have understood that you are advertising for this particular clinic for whatever reason but people just do what they want :) no need to try and convince them!

Personally i have no problems whatever vet people are using - i am sure this one is good as well - as long as the animal they care for is treated properly.

PS. This is bit beside the topic, BUT, it might be strange for some of our amerian friends that some of us europeans find american style in general a bit strange and we might prefer our own style (the same applies with restaurants etc where we might actually prefer e.g. continental european (french/italian) way and find american "friendliness" a bit over the board and fake.

But of course most important is to get your animal healthy and if you prefer one place against another, that is perfectly ok.
